30th, 12:40am, I am writing this letter just as it has become my 30st birthday. After becoming Squad Commander, we are doing our duties while rotating the night shifts. I am able to write this letter as I applied for ‘yeon-deung’ beforehand. Oh! When we apply for ‘Yeon-deung’ and gain permission, we can turn on the lights after lights-out. During this time, we can study at night and also write letters. ‘Yeon-deung,’ it’s a pretty name, right?
I am writing this letter at this late hour because I really wanted to tell you about a fun incident that happened just a few moments ago. To be honest, birthdays are not so special, but still... Doing the night shift starting from the day before, over until your birthday is quite disappointing. ‘Why can’t they let me off..’ During the duty rotation period, my senior told me that he wanted to wish me a happy birthday at 12am so he purposely put me on the shift. Even though it was not a special event and there was no cake or firecrackers, I was very grateful of what he said. Happy Birthday! In that instant, I was a little shameful for being disappointed. As I returned to the Residence Hall when my shift ended, I began to have useless expectations. ‘No way would my peers at my Residence Hall be awake, waiting to surprise me! Then do I have to play with them?’ When I opened the door, everyone was pretending to be asleep. I attempted to speak to them and asked them to do what they had prepared. But, they were all actually sleeping. I was a little embarrassed. I couldn’t help but laugh when I told them to go back to sleep. Why did I think my birthday was a big deal... haha
I saw that a lot of Starlights wished me a Happy Birthday through cafe events, bus stops, subway, Big Issue and Instagram. Thank you and thank you again. I cannot prepare gifts or events at the moment as I am in the military. I don’t know if I am allowed to only receive this much when I haven’t done anything for you. Actually, I wanted to provide a small surprise event, even if it’s not a song like last year. There are times when I suddenly realize that I am in the military. I had this feeling as my birthday approached. As there is no event that I can do during the limited time that I have during my holidays and leaves, I felt sorry so I wondered what I can do to deliver my heart. So I applied for Yeon-deung and decided to tell you guys ‘what story comes into mind at exactly 12am.’ Of course I cannot deliver or show you at exactly 12am, but I wanted to share it with you. Just as a single congratulations from my senior and birthday cards in my locker from my peers can warm my heart even without an event, I hope my heart gets delivered to the Starlights. The night is getting deeper and when the day brights, I will only have 99 days left until discharge. I feel a bit shy saying this but please wait for me a little longer. When I get discharged, I will give you a surprise gift as I could not give it to you this Birthday. Until then, be healthy and stay well until we meet.
