My new song **"Same For You"** and its music video were scheduled to be released on YouTube on 11th September, but I've pushed the video back to **Friday 18th September**. This is because it would have conflicted a little too closely with the release of my cover of Pink Floyd's **"The Final Cut"**, which came out on 8th September. 🙁

I'm really looking forward to you hearing the song and seeing the video. I'm really pleased with how it turned out overall, but particularly with my guitar work on it. I really hope you enjoy it. 🎸

The Final Cut was the song most of you chose for my third and final cover from Pink Floyd's The Final Cut.

I went for a more intimate acoustic approach, building strings, synths and orchestral elements around the guitar and vocal while trying to keep the emotion of the original.

"Same For You" as an upcoming track to be released on 11th September. Here are some shots from the video. There's a loneliness to be found on the busy neon lit streets; to be alone in a crowd hits on two fronts, isolation and rejection.

"Same for you" is about our tendency to invalidate other people's experiences by telling them this or that has happened to us too. I'm pretty sure no-one has quite felt like I have at times; would you say that the events and the way you experience them are unique?

This video was built from Royalty free video footage and images found online and generative ai content which used these found visuals as a template to elaborate on. The video was edited and arranged by me to capture.

Technology serves the artist, not the other way round.

In the early 1980s, Peter Gabriel was one of the very first musicians to buy a Fairlight CMI; this was the world’s first commercial sampling synthesiser. Back then, traditional musicians kicked up a fuss and protested, and claimed that sampling real sounds digitally was "cheating" and would ruin music.

Brian Eno created "generative music" systems where he would program a set of digital rules into a synthesiser and let the computer generate random, ambient backdrops.

Do you see where I’m going with this?

In music, AI is an evolution of that same process.

Yes, it shouldn’t be used lazily to steal copyrighted melodies or churn out endless songs to mass export to Spotify, but this is not the only way AI is used. It is also used as a modern evolution of the synthesiser, or the studio effects pedal. It can be used to generate a singular, eerie background texture, or a specific digital drum pattern for a project. This is how I use it and there is no issue with this that makes any sense, except for in the heads of people who lack the contextual understanding needed to override their extreme and blinding prejudices. 

For my songs, I build the song structures, write the lyrics, play the instruments as a foundation (e.g., synths, MIDI instruments, live guitars, etc). I also use AI to add to MY creative flow, not the other way round. It isn’t my ghostwriter - well, apparently it is according to the warped mind of some idiotic troll on YouTube - these people are incapable of listening to reason.

Eno and Gabriel are two absolute legends. These pioneers of music embrace new technologies to see what artists can achieve, even using generative software. Yes, they worry about how it is used and who owns it. However, they accept as I do that experimenting with AI-generated sounds can be creatively worthwhile, as long as the artist possesses the lived experience and emotional truth to recognise which specific sound "has soul" and makes them feel something.

Moving on to videos briefly. Traditional high-end, 3D animated music videos usually require massive production studios, massive rendering farms, and multi-million-pound budgets. AI democratises this process so that independent musicians are not held back by a lack of money. A single independent artist working from a laptop in their bedroom can render a Hollywood-scale dreamscape in a matter of days - Check out Peter Gabriel’s video for his song “The Court” (excellent tune btw) for an example of what's possible. Art thrives creatively where there's nothing to hold you back. I should not have to be constrained for financial reasons.

Someone once criticised the video for my song "Between The Spaces" for utilising AI footage which I pieced together (and took me bloody ages). They suggested that I was being creatively lazy and said that I don't have to use AI. The reason they believed this is because Coldplay were able to make a video of their lead singer simply walking on a beach (I don't remember the singer's name - they're shite!). FFS, it isn't hard to understand that I shouldn't have to limit the imaginative scale of my videos because I don't have access to a Hollywood-level film studio. It's morally dubious to suggest I should restrain the scope of my ideas because of this. Aside from that, I would never take advice from anyone that uses Cold Play as a measure of quality!

Personally, I think that any musician who has a problem with AI in a blanket way is illogical and probably a hypocrite.
