“Don’t you dare call my mother a tramp!” Telemachus growled with sudden anger that was uncharacteristic of him. His mother was the strongest, most amazing person he knew. She was all he had. She had done no wrong and yet she got this?

“Oh yeah? Whatcha gonna do about it, champ?” snorted Antinous.

Telemachus knew exactly what he was going to do about it.

“I’ll see you here tomorrow.” Telemachus said, not knowing where these strange words were coming from and regretting his sudden bravery as soon as he spoke. “Same time, same place.”

Antinous rolled his eyes. “Alright. Whatever. Just let me finish making this flatbread first.”

“Mother, please. You don’t understand.”

Penelope, however, did not listen. “How dare those scoundrels threaten my son. Eurycleia, please, fetch me my bow. I’m sure I remember quite a bit from my training in Sparta I’ll be—“

“I know you’ll be fine!” Cried Telemachus. “Gods, mother, I know it. But you’ve misunderstood. They taunted me, sure.. but..” Telemachus was suddenly overwhelmed with embarrassment.

“They what?” Penelope said, looking concerned.

“They insulted you.” Said Telemachus. “And they asked what I was going to do about it. And…
Oh gods mother I’m so stupid!”

“What happened, little wolf?” Penelope asked gently although she had a feeling she already knew. He was his father’s son after all.

“I… I challenged Antinous. Told him I’d fight him. Tomorrow.”

Penelope paled. “Telemachus… you don’t need to put yourself in danger by defending me. I’m perfectly used to their insults. You do understand that was an extremely idiotic thing to do?” She said, her voice sharp, although he knew that was just a cover up for fear of what could happen to him in the following day.

“But,” she continued. “You challenged Antinous. It would be quite different if it were the other way around but you cannot back down from your own challenge.” 

Spoken like a true Spartan.

“Then.. what do I do?” Telemachus asked, his voice shaking. “He’s so much bigger and stronger than me. I can’t fight. I don’t stand a chance.”

“Well..” Penelope paused. “Where is this fight taking place? Inside the palace?”

Telemachus shuddered. 

“No. Over at the harbor. The part outside of Ithacan control. You know how it goes, mother. Everything is legal there! It’s pure chaos! No one has control..”

I should have written this yesterday, but today is the second day of September, which is also childhood cancer awareness month.
As most of you know, my brother Jay had leukemia, although he has been cancer free for two years. First I’d like to say that yes, we should continue and try to amp up the awareness spreading for this month, this post isn’t really about Jay. This is more about me.

You see, when people, hospitals, really anyone sees a child with cancer, they are focused on the sick child and that child only. They don’t see the bigger picture.

I feel like someone is going to come at me for saying this but… siblings of cancer patients have it pretty much as rough as their sibling, they’re just constantly invalidated and ignored. And don’t try to argue with me. Most of you probably can’t talk on this subject.

I was only SIX YEARS OLD, and literally had PTSD.

So next time you see a child going through childhood cancer, please make sure to check up on their siblings as well. 💜
