The "D40" is drawn from my brother Dan's Guild guitar. He and my brother Rick were both guitarists, Rick being my finest early inspiration for acoustic steel. (My best friend, Dick Benoit was playing flamenco pieces after his enthusiasm for Carlos Montoya, whom we met, and classical pieces traditional and modern, e.g. Villa Lobos, Jobim). I've played since I was a teenager, various guitars -but acoustic steel, in this style, only since about January of 2006. John Fahey is my greatest inspiration, and was one of Br'er Rick's musical models as well. Learning to play with fingerpicks was a challenge, but has opened up possibilities multifold. (John Pearse stainless steel Hi-Rider picks on three fingers with a Dunlop L. thumbpick works for me.) Since starting to play acoustic with fingerpicks, I have been able to write pieces now and then. Some takes of these are posted here.
