You first.

One of the things that troubled me as an actor was this: people paid to watch my films. That may sound obvious, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Many of them came from middle-class and lower-middle-class families. Some would save up for that ticket. Some would go out of their way to buy it. And I kept asking myself: are we giving them something worth more than what they paid for?

That question changed the way I chose the films I agreed to act in. It wasn’t enough for a film to be successful. It had to deserve its audience. Perhaps that’s one reason I turned down so many offers. It wasn’t only about being typecast or choosing the right role. I felt a responsibility towards the people sitting in the theatre.

The audience had given me everything. The least I could do was respect their time, attention, and trust.

How do you get the best out of life?

You begin by acknowledging your closest companion.

Your breath.

Breath is life. Without it, there is no you.

Make friends with your breath.

When people think of yoga, they often think of a mat.

I think of a way of living.

Yoga has been part of my life since childhood. What my mother taught me, I would often share with other children. Over the years, yoga evolved from something I lived, to something I studied deeply, and eventually to something I taught more formally.

But the greatest lesson yoga taught me was this:

How we think.
How we eat.
How we respond.
How we relate.
How we live.

Yoga doesn’t begin and end on a mat.

It travels with us.

FLOW

As a supermodel, I learned poses.

Through yoga, I discovered flow.

After a lifetime of practicing and teaching yoga, I’ve noticed something beautiful:

Yoga grows on you, and you grow in yoga.

The body becomes more responsive, more fluid, and more at ease.

For me, that is one of yoga’s most precious gifts.

Vitality.

Restorative leg poses have always been among my favourites.

By reversing the usual flow of energy in the body, I find them deeply relaxing. They calm your nervous system, quiet the fight-or-flight response, and leave one feeling renewed.

And then there is the simple joy of it.

Feeling the breeze.
Watching the clouds drift by.
Being completely present in the moment.

After a lifetime of yoga, I still find myself falling in love with it.

I like who I am.
Why should age change that?

If a woman in her twenties dresses a certain way, it is seen as normal.

If a woman in her fifties or sixties dresses the same way, suddenly people ask:

Why?

When we judge older women for being visible, expressive, sensual, stylish, independent, or free, we are unconsciously creating the rules we will later apply to ourselves.

We will all age.

And there is no stopping that.

Why judge? Why should age dictate how a woman is allowed to express herself?

Get hip.

“If my boyfriend cheats on me, it is his funeral!” 😄

Rather bold words from a cover girl.

The interview also talks about keeping my soul alive, valuing silence and solitude, and carrying an independence that mattered deeply to me.

Only now do I realize what those thoughts were pointing towards.

The yogini was already there.

Perhaps we do not become who we are. We spend our lives discovering who we have always been.

People often assume that if you question objectification, it means you’re against sexuality.

I’m not.

Even in the late 80s and early 90s, I spoke openly about independence, relationships and making my own choices.

In Aashiqui, one of my character’s strongest desires was to stand on her own two feet and be independent.

It was exactly what I was living in my own life.

In Cloud Door, my character’s strongest desire was erotic. She was a lonely princess living in a fortress, with a parrot as her closest companion. It was to that parrot that she confessed her deepest desires.

Cloud Door was part of an international series called Erotica. An avant-garde art film, not a commercial film, and selected to open at the Cannes Film Festival.

For me, the story was never about rebellion.

It was about freedom.
