Plant Based Bistro

We love food. Now that we're plant based, we try to recreate all the foods we loved in the "before times" into plant based versions. Sometimes it's made healthier, sometimes, it's just plain old comfort food. Everything from pasta to paninis and burgers to barbeque, we're gonna try to make it plant based.

So I was doomscrolling on Facebook just now and saw some ad for one of those "check your body type to know what to eat" ads, and it told the woman in the ad to eat more carbs to lose weight. The comment section exploded as you might expect. One person said, "Be careful eating carbs because they turn to sugar and too much sugar in your system will lead to diabetes.". Obviously this is inaccurate. I typed out a full response including links to studies and other useful information, and then read the rest of the comments. Tons of people claiming carbs are the reason people are sick, gain weight, etc, and only animal products will save us all.

I deleted my comment.

Why? It would do nothing but fan flames of negativity. Those who comment that way won't have their minds changed by me or anyone else. Yes, I know we should all try to help those who need it, and educate those who aren't, but some people just will never see the truth. They would rather be blind to it and further their own bad decisions.

One guy who was particularly outspoken about consuming only animal products claimed he was in better shape than all the others who told him he was wrong. He looked to be about 100 lbs overweight in his photos. He also claimed that vegans who claim to be healthy are malnourished and weak and that's why they appear so thin.

This world is seriously messed up about health. It's sad and it's frustrating, but I am not a doctor, and I don't need to get into online nutrition intelligence wars with unarmed opponents.

Just a decade ago, I never would think of going plant based, and arguing with me would have been futile. Everyone finds their own way, and that's the only way to make anyone change.

I've been trying some new things lately to try and lose weight and get my blood glucose and blood pressure down. The first step is to improve my insulin resistance! We are doing intermittent fasting again... I'm not convinced it works, and lots of studies show it as inconclusive, but... I do think I'll eat a bit less and it's supposed to help with insulin resistance, so here we go. I was taking melatonin every night to help me sleep only to find out that isn't helping the situation at all. Then.... coffee. Dammit. Coffee seems to have an acute effect on insulin sensitivity, meaning it negatively affects it for a few hours. BUT, if you drink coffee throughout the day (like I did), the effect can be longer lasting. So, trying no coffee too. Hate that part, but... if it works, it works. We are also walking 30-60 minutes every day. I even have a treadmill so I can be sure to do it.

This is something we regularly do by the way. We look at the situation and try to make changes that will correct us when we go off the path. I'm a habitual type of person, so if I form a good habit, I usually stick with it, but I can also form bad habits, and stick with them too. Sadly, over time, we stray a bit even from the good habits and need a bit of "course correction".

Derica is playing along with all of this too, though she does not have Diabetes. She wants to be healthier and lose some weight, so, it's great to have that support. When I say "we" that's what I mean.

I'm sure many will have different opinions on what works or does not work. By all means, you are welcome to your opinion. I would like to assert that any changes we make are not done lightly or frivolously, but are instead backed up by the hundreds of hours of time I spend reading books, studies, and listening to doctors and nutritionists. These things are not a one size fits all for various reasons, and my own personal experiences also weigh in to our decisions. So, thank you for not being a jerk about our choices please :)

Anyway, just wanted to give a little check in since we're about 5 weeks into the new year and thought I'd share my progress. I'm down about 7 pounds and my typical blood glucose is about 40 points lower than a month ago. So that's progress!

Thanks for watching and have a great day,
-Brian
