Why the name: Sirius B is the faint companion of the Dog Star, Sirius A. It was inferred in 1844 from the wobble it puts on Sirius A, and first seen in 1862. It is also personal: my ancestral roots trace back to Mali, where the Dogon carry an oral tradition, recorded in 1950 by French anthropologists, that names Sirius's companion, Po Tolo, and tells of the Nommo, amphibious water beings, ancestors and teachers, said to have come down from the sky. The tradition presents itself as ancient knowledge handed down through generations. Where it came from is argued: Dogon astronomy, outside contact, or something stranger. The earliest records are from the 20th century.
