Rick and FJ met under strange circumstances. It happened sometime past Loretta's (Rick's wife's) death, and quite recently after Rick finally cleared his name after being falsely accused of the crime that took her life. He was in shambles; his family was destroyed, his childhood fears rekindled, his public reputation ruined, and the only thing that kept him going was his young daughter he had to take care of.

FJ appeared in his life as yet another one of the cases Rick had to deal with. He was an amnesiac that Rick had found beaten up on the same cemetery his wife was buried at and helped get medical treatment for. As per usual, the Grimport shelters were far too crowded as is and Rick's colleagues wanted to essentially fend for himself. Rick wasn't quite fond of this idea (aka he screamed at them) and decided he'd just help FJ get back on his feet on his own while investigating his case and trying to figure out the mystery behind his identity.

They spent months in that little motel room, trying to trigger FJ's memories, and for once, Rick managed to live a life where grief wasn't his entire purpose and identity. He enjoyed it so much, in fact, that he began to fear he was growing too trusting again. He began to care for FJ, and FJ began to care for him, and before he knew it, Rick had to wonder if allowing himself that joy was a mistake all along.

Their relationship had lots of ups and downs, many of which you'll read in the upcoming trilogy next year hopefully, but some that you can also see on my P♡treon, along with lots more extra content and trilogy illustrations, book excerpts and things that I otherwise don't post here ❤️‍🩹

New upcoming trilogy illustration! And it's my beautiful babies 🥹❤️‍🩹 they were so happy back in 1968 ah 💔 I can't take it :,)

And listen, I love FJ so very much. There's a reason he's in all three books and the third book is nearly entirely his experience, but there was just no way for either of these two to recover from Loretta's (Rick's late wife and Maggie's mother) passing with no scars left behind :( Rick saved Maggie from drowning in that grief far too young, but FJ saved Rick from drowning too, but he was just never the same. It took a bit before he could be as happy as he was back during that first decade he spent in Grimport, and he held a lot of fondness for those memories ❤️‍🩹

STORY RAMBLING:

Rick's life essentially revolved around lies. Not because he was particularly fond of lying, no. He couldn't do anything different unfortunately, because he left his old life behind knowing he will be hunted down. What he didn't expect is for him to encounter the same evil in a different coat in Grimport where he moved, and he did his best to fix whatever broken system he could get his hands on. Above all fear, above all trauma and every single paranoid thought, he was most terribly afraid of allowing one single other human to end up like him.

He didn't expect, however, that this selflessness would turn into an obsession, into a public outcry, and would change his life forever. It would mark the beginning of his family, but the ending of his safety. His old life did find him, and it found him when he least expected it to - when he already began to believe his version of reality wasn't the same one everyone else experienced.

He would face this truth and just how interconnected his entire life had been without him ever knowing, and it would mark the true beginning of his fight for freedom. Not for himself, but for his loved ones, and everyone trapped in the same broken system that created him.

I say as I cry myself to sleep 🤧
I'm still working on a bunch of trilogy illustrations (all of the WiPs for those, plus some exclusive ones, are already up on my p♡treon!) and god, every time I see a happy Rick and FJ one from book three, it makes my heart tear up 😭

STORY RAMBLING:

Rick was good at surviving, but he was not very good at not getting hurt (unfortunately haha :,)
A big part of the first trilogy is the parallel between Rick's physical and mental deterioration when put against his slow descent into trying to fix the system which, truthfully, cannot be fixed by a single man. He was essentially working against corruption much bigger than him, trying to escape the hunters of his past, who had much greater influence, and in it all, he lost himself in his vengeance, and lost himself to obsessions. His hands weren't clean, as were no one's, and the damage showed on his mind as it did on his body.

FJ, bless his heart, thought Rick was just ridiculously unlucky for many years :,) mysterious injuries just kept reappearing and poor Rick was just like "must have be that old sprain from '63" as he nearly breaks his back because his SPINE IS MISALIGNED

Safe to say, he wasn't of great health, and he absolutely did not help that situation whatsoever (though I'd say he really couldn't have avoided at least a portion of it ❤️‍🩹). FJ somehow did help it though, and was a massive reason why Rick even walked way past his first serious recovery ❤️

Rick and his bESTIEE 🥰🥰🥰 I know it looks like they hate each other but trust me they're besties, they just have complicated feelings and live complicated lives 😩

Btw for anyone not in the know, yes Rick is everything to me and all, but Justus Harris is the best character in the books, point blank period. Canonically he is the most rational levelheaded guy, he's emphatetic, he's fair, he's loyal, he's a loving husband, a good boss - he's the BEST hahha ✨️🕺 Rick is literally like his weird demon parrot thing that he's too attached to get rid of, Justus hates the chaos he brings along but he loves him too much to chase him away ✋️😔

They met after Rick defended Justus' young apprentice in court after he died because of a local cop. The New Rosea Headquarters tried to save themselves from the public scrutiny and pushed it all under a rug, manipulating the courts until the cop was set free and, well... Rick, who still hasn't recovered from the loss of his wife whose case also stalled because of the Headquarters had different plans.

He became the bridge between the paw and the crime of Grimport ever since, under a protection of many but a friend to no one, and Justus, bless his heart, truly didn't know at first that taking Rick under his wing would be like trying to protect the most fragile self destructive bomb presenting as a human there ever was :,) he's such a precious bean

Justus is also like a crime boss, so... he's not a GOOD good guy, but that's BESIDES THE POINT-

I'm working on a lot these days, updating the merch shop, commissioning voice actors and, most importantly, editing the books ♡ I'm also drawing a bunch of these illustrations that I'll put in the books when they're done 🥹❤️
