And listen, I love FJ so very much. There's a reason he's in all three books and the third book is nearly entirely his experience, but there was just no way for either of these two to recover from Loretta's (Rick's late wife and Maggie's mother) passing with no scars left behind :( Rick saved Maggie from drowning in that grief far too young, but FJ saved Rick from drowning too, but he was just never the same. It took a bit before he could be as happy as he was back during that first decade he spent in Grimport, and he held a lot of fondness for those memories ❤️🩹
