They were delayed by a week, but Zildjian EAK cymbals have arrived! They came packaged in this cymbal bag. Band name, or an unorthodox way of storing the remains of a loved one? I guess we’ll never know.

But — I did film an unboxing video. Whether or not I ever publish it or not remains to be seen.

New EP Streaming Everywhere!

"Prelude" is a 3 song EP of covers from the original Final Fantasy OST. It's made entirely with a Korg DS-8 synthesizer. Each cover is arranged to be as faithful to the original as possible. You can find it on your streaming platform of choice, and it's also available right here on YouTube in playlist form, complete with videos for each track.

Return of the three handed keyboardist...

I think my computer works again? Maybe? It seems like the problem was a GPU driver. I reinstalled it and haven't had any problems since, knock wood. So, for this video I've resumed my synth covers of the original Final Fantasy OST. The idea behind this project is to arrange the pieces exclusively using a Korg DS-8 synthesizer (since they both came out around the same time — 1987). The idea is to keep the arrangements as faithful to the original OST as possible, hence the three hands.

I've also created a playlist for easier access. So if you're looking for some gentle, atmospheric, synth vibe to accompany your day, a link will be below. It's only about 4 minutes long right now, but it's a start :)

It is Halloween...

To be completely honest, I was never big on Halloween for a variety of reasons, mostly stemming from my own neuroses. But I was just reminded of this video...

When I was 18, I joined a punk band called the Amber Jets. We continued playing off and on for about 15 years or so. Every year, there was a Halloween show at a local bar where bands would cover a full set of music from a particular artist. We did it twice. This video is part of our Operation Ivy cover set from 2009!

Over the years, I learned so much about playing and writing music from each of the members. We had so many adventures, and I'm so thankful to have those memories, and friendships.

Although we haven't been active in many years, the band never officially ended. It just seemed to be one of those things where life takes everyone in different directions, and it just kind of fades. It's a bittersweet thing to think about, but I hope that one day we'll make some music together again. If you're interested in hearing more, there's stuff floating around out there.

Thanks for reading, and as always thank you for your support. Here's wishing you a happy, safe Halloween!

More adventures in analog…

I was hoping to produce a track exclusively using the Akai. I don’t know if it’s how it was designed or just that it’s old and needs a tune up, but the Sound on Sound function is basically unusable for its intended use — BUT, it’s awesome when used as an effect!

There’s a weird delay happening between the right and left channels. If you boost the Line inputs while recording, you can create endless feedback loops that makes all kinds of weird psychedelic soundscapes. It also gets a really cool overdriven bass tone.

So there won’t be a full track, but I’ll definitely be using it as an effect in future tracks.

More experiments in analog recording:

I recorded a drum loop with a pair of stereo overheads through the Sony cassette deck on the right (because it has a cool onboard compressor) into the akai on the left.

This gave me some interesting tonal possibilities. Needless to say, it does the smooth analog tape thing as well as you’d expect, but it can get pretty wild when you start playing with gain staging. When you drive it really hard, the akai totally spazzes out and only lets through super short transients and almost has a bit-crushing sound.
