নির্বাচন কমিশন 2002 সালের পশ্চিমবঙ্গের ভোটার তালিকা নতুন করে ওয়েবসাইটে দিচ্ছে। তার ভিত্তিতেই এবার হবে বিশেষ পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ সংশোধন বা Special Intensive Revision, যার অর্থ কার্যত নতুন করে ভোটার তালিকা তৈরি। কমিশনের মতোই প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছে রাজনৈতিক দলগুলিও। ভোটার তালিকা তৈরির নামে সরকার নাগরিক পঞ্জি বা NRC-এর কাজ করতে চাইছে বলে বিরোধীদের অভিযোগ।

বিশ্ব ব্যাঙ্কের সর্বশেষ দারিদ্র ও সাম্য রিপোর্ট অনুসারে ভারতে উপভোগ বৈষম্য লক্ষণীয়ভাবে কমেছে। জিনি সূচক নেমে এসেছে ২৫.৫-এ, যা ইউরোপের কিছু দেশের তুল্য। সত্যিই কি ভারতের ধনী ও দরিদ্রের মধ্যে উপভোগের ব্যবধান কমেছে? আসলে এবার বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের এই হিসাবের ভিত্তিটাই অদ্ভুত। এবারই তারা প্রথম এবং একমাত্র ভারতের জন্য হিসাবের ভিত্তিটা বদলে দিয়েছে। গরিব মানুষের ভোগ ব্যয়ের মধ্যে তার জন্য সরকারের যে ব্যয় - রেশনের খাদ্যদ্রব্য, বাচচাদের স্কুলের ইউিফর্ম ও জুতো - সেগুলো ঢুকিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে। আবার ধনীর ব্যয় থেকে গাড়ি, হোম থিয়েটার, গয়নাগাঁটি, হাতঘড়ি ইত্যাদি বাদ দেওয়া হয়েছে। অর্থাৎ গরিবের খরচ বাড়িয়ে ও ধনীর খরচ কমিয়ে দেখানো হয়েছে। তাই ভোগ ব্যয়ের বৈষম্য কম দেখাচ্ছে।
