The Global Sumud Flotilla has announced the death of Teresa Regina de Avila e Silva, the 63-year-old mother of detained Brazilian activist Thiago Avila.

She died on May 5, while her son remained in Israeli custody. In a statement, the flotilla said Israeli forces intercepted 22 of its vessels in international waters near Crete, Greece, detaining 175 civilians from 21 boats. And the detained activists, including Avila, have been subjected to physical and verbal violence.

At least 60 journalists were killed in 2025 for doing journalism, according to data compiled by Reporters Without Borders.

For another year running, the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories remained the deadliest place to report.

The same dataset shows 140 journalists and media workers were listed as disappeared over the past year, with the highest figures recorded in Syria (37), Mexico (28) and Iraq (12).

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday demanded the immediate release of Brazilian Thiago Avila and Spanish national Saif Abu Keshek, two Global Sumud Flotilla activists who are being illegally detained by Israel following the seizure of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters.

An Israeli court on Tuesday extended the detention of two foreign activists by six days, a lawyer representing them said.

Their representatives have accused Israeli authorities of resorting to “psychological torture” and abusing the two men, who have been on a hunger strike for the past six days.

They appeared before a court in the southern city of Ashkelon for their second hearing, after being brought to Israel last week.

“Our government, together with that of Spain, which also had a citizen detained, demands that they be fully guaranteed their safety and immediately released,” Lula wrote on the X social network.

Israel is funnelling nearly $730 million into its 2026 public diplomacy drive, a dramatic surge aimed at reshaping Tel Aviv’s global image following years of atrocities in Palestine’s Gaza. The approved-budget marks a near fivefold jump from last year’s $150 million, which was around $7 to $10 million before its war on Gaza started in October 2023

Known as “hasbara”, the campaign reflects a high-stakes effort to counter mounting criticism abroad. Poll after poll suggests support is slipping, particularly in the US, long considered Israel’s most vital ally.

A suspected viral outbreak has turned a cruise into a floating emergency.

Three passengers have died aboard the MV Hondius during a suspected hantavirus outbreak in the Atlantic, according to the World Health Organization.

Around 150 people remain on board as concerns grow. Two cases have been confirmed so far, with more passengers reporting illness.

The vessel was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde when the outbreak was reported. The WHO says the risk to the wider public remains low, with no travel restrictions advised.

Palestinian photographer Saher Alghorra has won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography, recognised for his work with The New York Times documenting life and loss in Palestine’s Gaza amid Israeli genocide.

Described by Pulitzer administrator Marjorie Miller as “haunting” and “sensitive”, his images strip everything back to the bone, exposing the slow violence of starvation and the enduring scars of Israeli bombardment since October 2023.

Palestinian photographer Saher Alghorra has secured the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography for his poignant documentation of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Alghorra, a contributor to the New York Times, won for a series that Pulitzer Administrator Marjorie Miller described as “haunting” and “sensitive.”

The images illustrated the starvation and destruction resulting from Israel’s genocide in Gaza since October 2023.

Miller underscored the importance of independent journalism amid escalating obstacles.

In addition to the Pulitzer, Alghorra won the first prize for war photography at the 32nd Prix Bayeux Calvados-Normandie in France last October.

His award-winning report, “Trapped in Gaza: Between Fire and Famine”, highlighted the reality of life under Israeli siege and the plight of civilians caught between bombardment and starvation.

After Iranian officials said Tehran fired warning shots at a US warship to keep it from entering the Strait of Hormuz, Brent oil prices jumped more than five percent, nearing $115 a barrel before dropping to $111.

The incident has heightened concerns over possible disruption to one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, through which large volumes of crude oil, refined products, and liquefied natural gas from Gulf producers are transported.

An illegal Israeli settler was arrested on April 29 after assaulting a nun in occupied East Jerusalem — in an escalating series of Israeli attacks against the city's Christian community.

Home to some of Christianity's most sacred sites, Jerusalem has seen its Christian population decline sharply under Israel's occupation policies and sustained institutional pressure.
