I Will Teach You To Be Rich
I got an email from a reader last week. She and her husband bought their dream house.
Mortgage ate 55% of their income. (Remember, your total housing costs should ideally be below 28% of gross pay.)
They had no savings. The roof needed replacing. They couldn't afford it. Her husband couldn't sleep.
This isn't one couple's story. This is happening across America. And it's what happens when you buy without a system.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich
The first step in building your Rich Life is to start envisioning it. What would it look like?
Because your Rich Life is yours, no one can tell you what's in it. That's for you to decide.
But what if you don’t even know what you want? Or you have a general feel … but aren't sure on the specifics?
That’s why I like to start with a high-level brainstorming session or what I like to call The Bucket List Brainstorm.
This exercise will help you start getting specific about what really excites you and what matters the most to you. Get these items on paper first. Then you can build your Rich Life around your biggest, most compelling life goals.
To do your own Bucket List Brainstorm, grab a pen and paper and follow these steps:
1️⃣ What’s on your Rich Life bucket list?
Quickly list the first 15 things that come to mind. They could be travel destinations, things you want to buy, activities, events, people you want to meet, etc.
2️⃣ When you're done, circle your top 5.
What do you notice? Are there any trends or similarities?
3️⃣ For each of your top 5 items, think about when you'd like to do them.
What timeline makes the most sense for you?
By age 40, I’d like to do ________________.
Between ages 40 and 50, I’d like to do ________________.
Between ages 50 and 60, I’d like to do ________________.
Note: You can do this exercise as many times as you like. Taking 10 minutes to really think about what goals are the most exciting to you may open up more ideas. Even better ideas. Keep going until your "Top 5" shortlist is irresistibly exciting to you.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich
My wife and I were talking yesterday, staying at this amazing, beautiful hotel about how, one of the surprising things I’ve realized is that once you start to make more money and be able to spend it on the things you love, I actually think one of the things that governs what we do with our money is a surprising word: restraint.
Like, we’re here, we can order anything on the menu, and we’re like, “We’ll just have this and this.” And you see this a lot with people who have money.
They could eat anything, or they could have the fanciest car. And a lot of times they’re just like, “That’s really not for me. I prefer to drive a Honda,” or “I prefer to eat the same thing I ate at home.”
And I like this idea of restraint because I think when you’re younger, you have this dream: “I want to have money so I can stay at these amazing places and have this beautiful car.”
It’s cool. I love the dream. But once you get the money to be able to do it, you actually start to question… is this something I really want? And I think that’s the most interesting part of a Rich Life.
Restraint only works when you’ve already decided what actually matters to you.
Otherwise it just turns into random yes/no decisions—and you end up wondering, “Why am I even doing this?”

I Will Teach You To Be Rich
Are you 'house poor'? This is one of the worst financial afflictions today.
These are people who bought more house than they can afford. They never ran the numbers. They basically just said, "Oh, that looks like a decent monthly payment."
But they forgot to account for everything from maintenance and taxes, to transaction costs, and buying new furniture — basically all kinds of stuff.
They bought this house thinking they were doing the right thing. And suddenly, they can't afford to travel, they can't afford to save or invest as much as they used to (or would like to), and now they are trapped.
Everyone from the outside is like, "Ooo, they're a homeowner! So cool!" But inside, you know something is WRONG.
Run the numbers today and avoid being house poor for the rest of your life. I'll show you how inside my Money Coaching program.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich
Every year, reevaluate your beliefs about money.
For example, "there is no meal at any restaurant that can materially affect my finances, so I give myself the freedom to order whatever I want." For someone who couldn't afford appetizers as a kid, this is incredibly freeing.
What is it for you? It might be getting a morning coffee, or putting kids in a special activity, or doing a weekly date night.
If you're earning more and your net worth has increased, yet you're still agonizing over the price of laundry detergent, it's worth reevaluating your beliefs about money.
This also works in reverse. If one of you has lost a job, for example, it’s time to cut spending dramatically.
When things are good, recognize it! Save more, invest more, and spend more on the things you love.
When things aren’t going well, acknowledge it and make rapid changes.
