As a young boy I was hooked on building train sets. I would spend hours in my shed planning and building trainset layouts. On one occasion I made 80% of the track run through mountains!
For me it was the art of building the layout that excited me when it came to trains. I was never very interested in the particulars of a train or its performance. Instead, it was about building the set. Moulding the chicken wire into mountains, shaping the paper mache into hills, creating the trees and placing the houses.
As I grew older circumstances changed and I either did not have the space or the time to continue with my model train set hobby. Now that I am a lot older I find that I have the time but not the space and so I decided to track down and test some of the train set simulators that are available and see if I can rekindle some of the magic that I felt when I was building those train layouts all those years ago.
