Diminishing staffing levels, shrinking budgets, ever changing training requirements and increased call volumes is creating a real issue for rural fire departments across the nation. Our hope is to share any tips and tricks we've learned over the years that might help other departments in similar situations. A bonus would be to spread awareness of the increasing challenges smaller departments are facing.

About CLFD: The Clear Lake Fire Department is city owned, and staffed by "Paid-On-Call" members. Services provided include: fire protection, EMS response, swift and cold water rescue. We also respond to downed utilities, natural disasters, lost persons and more. We cover 68 sqr "rural" miles, with only 1 "municipal" sqr mile equipped with hydrants.
