Plein air painting I did in the evening at Folsom Lake, California a couple years ago. I went to this lake almost daily for a year and did hundreds of paintings here. This is one of the earlier paintings of me becoming familiar with the landscape there. There was a group of people hanging out and barbecuing beneath the tree.

Here’s some close-ups from the painting I posted the other day. I thought it’d be cool to share some of most interesting parts of the painting. Also find the reference photo and final painting again at the end. This is a river near my place here in Malaysia. Definitely will be painting more of this river soon.

Before painting a complicated scene, try reducing it to three values. If the design doesn't work there, more detail won't save it.

If your watercolor keeps drying much lighter than expected, you may simply need more pigment in the initial wash.
