Rocks are cool. I used to hate painting rocks in my landscapes because I could never paint them realistically. It’s only when I started painting them from life that I understood them more.
I painted around 50 or so paintings last year of rocks like this. All from life. I kinda miss painting them now because they’re all submerged under the lake. Snow melt raised the lake water levels.
It’ll be a few months before the levels drop again. I guess this gives me time to explore new subjects.

A few weeks ago I spent the morning at a new place - Folsom Lake Marina. Trying some new subjects but it’s also a beautiful place for landscapes as well. Can’t wait to go back. Right now if I go outside for more than 10 minutes, I’m dying from pollen 😭 but I’ll be back out painting more soon anyway.

The bed is warm and comfortable but the morning light is worth braving a bit of cold. Won’t grow much staying in the comfort zone.

This is a recent rock painting I did outdoors. Super cold that morning and I couldn’t really feel my fingers but somehow I was able to still paint this one.
Earlier this year I was frustrated whenever I tried painting rocks in my paintings. I was using photographs and I could never get them to look natural or pleasing.
After I started painting them from life, they’ve become something I actually enjoy painting most of the time. I’ve learned what it takes to make them look more realistic but still simple. And it’s been a lot of fun too, along the way.
I feel that 4 months of painting outside has leveled up my landscape paintings this year a lot. Looking forward to painting and sharing more soon.

I’ve painted this group of trees countless times over the past 4 months. Folsom Lake, CA. This one’s a favorite of mine. The harmony of the colors that afternoon was quite nice.
Painting the same thing over and over eventually feels a bit boring but it forces me to think about changing up the composition and trying new things. Pushes my creativity a bit. I still have fun with it though. Hope you enjoy it.

Morning light on Folsom Lake, CA, with some beautiful rocks. One of the most fun and magical times to paint and be outside.

If I can’t go out and paint, then I’ll just do some tiny sketches on scrap paper, learn, and have fun. Learned a lot so far actually, things I didn’t expect.

The past 2 months have been full of plein air outings and paintings. Usually I do around 2 paintings when I go out, if I can. Having tons of fun and growing tremendously. Be sure to click the image to see the full photo 😁 just a sneak peak of some of the paintings. I’ve done over 50 new paintings recently. More to come soon.
