Last year I made over 300 paintings. Most were average. Some were great.
But the real win was showing up consistently no matter what.

Taking a risk is almost always better than playing it safe. Especially in painting. And sometimes you don’t have a choice but to go for it and do your best. That’s what I did with this painting.
This is the South Fork of the American River in California. It was cold and overcast. The scenery was beautiful but incredibly challenging. When painting it, I was thinking there’s no way I can make this into a good painting. It was a struggle the whole time. But the cool thing about painting outdoors is once you bring it home and stop comparing it to nature, you have a good painting most of the time. And I feel that’s what happened here.

Everyone thinks about talent when making art.
But something overlooked is desire to create.
Without the desire to create art, you won't get far.

Creating art is never a 'waste' of materials. Creating excuses to never use your materials is a waste.
Don’t let your materials outlive your creativity.
