While we can still celebrate how far this American Experiment has come, we must demand that we don't go backwards, and instead move more towards equity and justice.

It's a shitshow.

We’ve got major plans!
I just wanted to drop a quick note to let you know that Bridget and I will be on Instagram today. We’ll be doing the 12 new starts in 12 hours challenge on New Year’s Eve. Because doesn’t every cross stitcher need an excuse to start 12 new projects?!
Bridget and I will start around noon Eastern time (New York Time) and have a new start every hour on the hour until midnight. I’ll only be doing six new starts since I have plans with my in-laws tonight, so we’ll see how much Bridget posts without me. 🤨
I don’t think there’s even an official hashtag this year so I’m making one up!

Wishing you a warm and Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate.

While it’s important to recognize the very real and dark origins of this holiday, it is also true that we can celebrate by honoring the blessings in our lives.

I enjoy Thanksgiving because it is one of the few widely celebrating holidays in the USA that isn’t overly commercialized. We don’t have to buy presents or fireworks, we can choose just to share a meal with people we love, often prepared with care by hand.

And I am thankful for you, this amazing and supportive cross stitch community.

Notorious Needle

Turns out, America really did want this guy. At least, it looks like voters did, or just people who were able to bypass voter suppression.

I genuinely thought Harris would win. She is the better candidate in everything we’re told matters: she raised more money, had bigger rallies, more (still relevant) celebrity endorsements and a hopeful message.

But none of that mattered. I don’t know if America is too racist or too misogynist or too near-sighted or if too many of us let our lizard-brain make decisions and relish the drama. Fear and anger won. America is not uniquely immune to the shiny veneer of fascism. I’m sure better political minds than mine will be talking about it.

Some of my loved ones are asking me, what do we do now?

We mourn for a little bit. We practice self-care and sit in our feelings for a little bit. We enjoy the holidays with our loved ones and celebrate the fact we’re still here to keep fighting.

Because the fight goes on. I don’t know how bad it has to get before more folks see it, but it will get worse. And we’ll be there to guide them away from fascism and back towards Democracy.

There are ebbs and flows, and we’re stuck in this ebb for at least another two years.

Next, I’m going to educate myself on the scenario we’re in. I’m reading Ruth Ben-Ghiat’s book “Strongmen”. I’ve always hated that term because it sounds like a good thing, but it’s a political term meaning men who lead with machismo, tear down democracy and get rich doing it.

Anyway, the book goes into common threads between men who are dictators and fascists, how they rise in power and, more importantly, how they fall from power. If Germany and Italy can do it, so can we.

Then I’m going to finish Let’s Move the Needle by Shannon Downey @badasscrossstitch . She talks about craftivism snd how to use it to build communities.

My husband likes to say that good times create soft people, soft people create hard times, hard times create strong people, and strong people create good times. We’re about to create some strong people again. 🩵🩵

I'd like to set the stage for after Election Day. The presidential election in the USA this year is going to get even more ugly.

It's unlikely that we'll know the outcome on election day November 5th. This is because it is still a close race electorally (surprisingly) and because of how several states count their votes.

In 17 states, mail-in ballots and early ballots are not counted until after the polls close.

Remember that after the 2020 election, which was the most secure election to date in the USA, MAGA falsely claimed voter fraud without a scrap of proof. And elected Republicans used those unsubstantiated claims to justify changes in how some states cast ballots and when those ballots are counted.

The delay in counting will cause a delay in results. MAGA will use this as an excuse to scream again, and falsely, claims of voter fraud.

Supervisors of Elections on a non-partisan basis work all over our country to ensure that our elections are fair and free and secure.

The truth is that voter fraud is extremely rare because there is little reward with near-certainty of getting caught.

The chaos and fear is the point. If MAGA can muddy the waters so that ordinary people can't tell what is true from what is false, folks will give up trying to figure it out. Which gives anarchists like MAGA the edge.

And MAGA continues to make threats against candidates, election workers and anyone who goes against them.

Mr. Rogers said that his Mom told him to "Look for the helpers."

I say "BE a helper."
