The Sounds of Portuguese

I want to inspire you to be able to say more than sim, obrigado and não compreendo. Understand and be understood in Portuguese! I make videos teaching Portuguese based on some of the most influential theories of second language acquisition which is Comprehensible input and TPRS with the occasional grammar lesson to keep you constantly moving forward!
I make original content in Portuguese with English subtitles to help increase and practice your comprehension.

The Sounds of Portuguese

✍️ Writing Exercise - Did you come up with a character (or two) in the last post?

Now we will add some information.
Write where they work and what languages they speak.

For example:

A Maria é enfermeira e trabalha numa clínica. Ela fala português.

O Ricardo é médico. Ele trabalha num hospital e fala português e sueco.

That’s it. No perfection needed.
Portuguese doesn’t need to be “finished” to be real.

If you feel comfortable, share your sentences in the comments - it’s always encouraging to see what others are writing 💛

The Sounds of Portuguese

✍️ Writing Exercise

This writing task is simple on purpose. Write 2 or 3 short sentences about two people you know, or characters you invent.

For each person, say their name and then their profession.

For example:

A Maria é enfermeira.
O Ricardo é médico.

That’s it. No perfection needed.
Portuguese doesn’t need to be “finished” to be real.

If you feel comfortable, share your sentences in the comments - it’s always encouraging to see what others are writing 💛

The Sounds of Portuguese

Bom Ano Novo, pessoal! ✨
Today is Dia de Reis (Little Christmas / Epiphany), and in Portugal, this date is still very much alive through music and community.

Across the country, you’ll hear traditional singing such as Janeiras, os Cantares de Reis (more in the Alentejo) and as Charolas in the Algarve – groups going door to door or gathering in villages to sing about the Three Kings, wishing prosperity, health and abundance for the year ahead.

It’s a popular folklore tradition here and it shows how language, culture and music are completely intertwined in Portugal 🇵🇹
Even if you don’t understand every word, the feeling is unmistakable.

In this video, I talk a little about Dia de Reis and these singing traditions, and why they still matter today.
🎶✨

If you’ve ever experienced Janeiras or Charolas in Portugal, I’d love to know where — and if not, this is a lovely glimpse into a tradition many people miss.

The Sounds of Portuguese

Olá, pessoal! Este ano vou ter de interromper os vídeos do calendário. A minha filha de 7 anos tem estado doente e agora também eu estou, por isso fiquei atrasada com os vídeos. Voltarei em breve com conteúdos regulares. Espero que o vosso dezembro esteja a correr bem!

Hello everyone! I have to pause this year’s calendar videos. My 7-year-old has been unwell, and now I’m also under the weather, so I’ve fallen behind. I’ll be back soon with regular content. I hope your December is going well!
