Monokate is the stage name of Kateryna Pavlenko, a Ukrainian singer, folklorist, songwriter, and lead singer of the electro-folk band Go_A, which represented Ukraine at the 2020 and 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. As a member of the band, Kateryna's work is intertwined with Ukrainian folklore, using folk singing techniques and sound. The band has popularised the use of folk motifs among many contemporary Ukrainian artists.
The Monokate project is Kateryna's personal project, in which she expresses her personal, deep emotions through music and poetry, and shows her inner dialog with herself and other people. Many of Monokate's songs are biographical. Through music, the singer tells her story, but touches on topics that are close to many people. Monokate's work is about love, disappointment, hope, friendship, people, and freedom.
