On April 8, 1957, Buddy Holly recorded his iconic track "Words of Love," a song he wrote himself. Released as a single on June 20, 1957, Holly made history by harmonizing with his own voice, using tape recordings to layer each part. Although it wasn't a chart-topping hit for Holly, the song has since become one of his most beloved and influential tracks. The Beatles later covered it in 1964 and even performed it live before recording their version. Today, "Words of Love" remains a timeless classic and is featured in many of Holly's greatest collections.
On September 22, 1958, in Brooklyn, New York, Elvis passionately discussed the origins of rock in a landmark interview. When a journalist dismissed rock as just a fleeting trend, Elvis boldly responded, "Rock and roll has been around for many years. It used to be called Rhythm and Blues, and it's been huge for as long as I can remember, though in the last 5 years, it's gotten bigger." Elvis, alongside icons like Bill Haley and Chuck Berry, turned rock into a global phenomenon, breaking records and reaching worldwide charts in ways no one had imagined. This song was not only on the US charts but also climbing the charts worldwide for the first time in history!
Elvis and his contemporaries elevated the rhythm of rock far beyond the traditional Rhythm and Blues, pioneered by artists like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Big Joe Turner, and Louis Jordan. What they created was no longer just Rhythm and Bluesโit was Rock and Roll!

The Impressions were pioneers in bridging the gap between doo-wop and the emerging pop-soul sounds of the late '50s. With a distinctive blend of harmonies, they introduced two of the most influential voices in soul music: Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield.
Released by Vee-Jay Records in May 1958, For Your Precious Love featured Jerry Butler's deep, emotional baritone, marking what is often considered the first true soul ballad. The song quickly gained traction, reaching #11 on the pop charts and #3 on the R&B charts by July 28, 1958. Has since become a beloved classic among vocal group enthusiasts and street-corner serenaders alike.

Chuck Berry on the Founding Fathers of Rock and Roll.
In a 1978 interview with Jane Pauley, Chuck Berry was asked, "Who would you say is the founding father of rock and roll if not yourself?"
Berry replied:
"Well, Iโll say [Fats] Domino, Louis Jordan, and Elvis Presley,
and even Fats Waller, because Fats played basic musicโฆyea, Fats Waller. That hustler Little Richard, heโs great, he was great in the beginning. Bill Haleyโฆ weโre all I think just a cog in the wheel. We all got the ball rolling."

In April-May 1957 at Radio Recorders, during the recording sections of the "Jailhouse Rock" movie soundtrack, Bill Black struggled with the bass line for "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care," storming out in frustration . Instead of scolding him, Elvis found it amusing, grabbed the bass, and played it himself the entire songโfor Elvis it was one of his proudest career moments.
