Seeing Blessings in Calamities

Shurayḥ (رحمه الله) said:
“No servant is afflicted with a calamity except that Allah has granted him in it three blessings:
that it was not in his religion,
that it was not greater than it was,
and that since it was destined to occur, it has now taken place.”

Abandoning the Obligatory Prayer

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:
“There is no disagreement among the Muslims that deliberately abandoning an obligatory prayer is among the gravest of sins and the greatest of major offenses. Its sin is greater than that of killing a soul or taking people’s wealth.
Such a person exposes himself to the punishment, anger, and disgrace of Allah in this world and the Hereafter.”

Two Qualities Leading to the Fire

Sufyān al-Thawrī (رحمه الله) said:
In what ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Sulamī advised:
“Beware of harshness and anger, for they lead to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire.”

Most Foolish of Fools

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:
“If a man owned a piece of land and hoped to benefit from its yield, but neglected it — neither sowing nor plowing it — while still having good expectations that it would produce crops like that of one who plows, sows, and tends to it, people would surely consider him among the most foolish of fools.
Likewise, one who has good expectations and strong hope of attaining the highest ranks and everlasting bliss, without obedience to Allah or drawing near to Him by fulfilling His commands and avoiding His prohibitions, is just as foolish.”

A Trait of the People of Desires

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:
“The people of desires magnify and honor those who agree with them, even if he is a wicked sinner; and they disparage and condemn those who disagree with them, even if he is from amongst the close slaves (awliyaa) of Allah, that fear Him (al-Mutaqoon).”

The Day the Messengers will say "O Allah! Save us! O Allah Save us!"

Ibn Hubayrah (رحمه الله) said:
“It is befitting for the one who hears the long hadith about intercession (Hadith al-Shafa‘ah) to feel great fear; for Adam, Nuh, Ibraheem, Musa, and Eesa (عليهم السلام) — each of them, despite his lofty rank and noble status — will forget all the good deeds he has done and remember only a single sin that had already been forgiven.
So what then should be thought of others whose lives were spent in sins?!”

Cure for showing off and conceit

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:
“People often associate showing off (riyā’) and conceit (‘ujb) together.
Showing off stems from associating partners with creation, while conceit stems from associating partners with oneself — and this is the state of the arrogant.
The one who shows off does not truly fulfill Allah’s saying:
‘You alone we worship’ (Al-Fātiḥah: 5),
and the conceited person does not truly fulfill His saying:
‘And You alone we ask for help.’
So whoever actualizes ‘You alone we worship’ is freed from showing off,
and whoever actualizes ‘And You alone we ask for help’ is freed from conceit.”

Necessity of Seeking Forgiveness for the Believers

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:
“All people share—indeed, are united—in their need, rather their complete necessity, for the forgiveness, pardon, and mercy of Allah. So just as a Muslim loves that his fellow Muslim seeks forgiveness for him, likewise he too should seek forgiveness for his Muslim brother. Thus his constant prayer should be:
‘My Lord, forgive me, my parents, the Muslims, and the believing men and women.’
Some of the early scholars recommended that everyone should persist in saying this supplication seventy times each day, making it a daily portion that he never neglects.
I heard our Shaykh (Ibn Taymiyyah) mention this, and he spoke of its tremendous virtue, though I do not recall the exact words. It may have been among his regular practices that he never omitted.
I also heard him say: ‘Saying it between the two prostrations (in prayer) is permissible.’
When a servant realizes that his fellow believers suffer the same afflictions as he does, and that they too are in need of what he needs, he will not refrain from praying for them unless he is extremely ignorant of Allah’s forgiveness and bounty. And such a person truly does not deserve to be aided—for indeed, the recompense is of the same nature as the deed.”

From the Etiquettes of taking Knowledge

“And do not hasten with the Qur’an before its revelation is completed to you, and say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge.’” [Surah Ṭā Hā, 20:114]
Shaykh Abdur-Rahman as-S'adi (رحمه الله) said:
From this noble verse, we learn the etiquette of receiving knowledge — that the one listening to knowledge should be deliberate and patient until the teacher has finished his speech, as its parts are connected to each other. When the teacher finishes, the student may then ask if he has a question. He should not rush to interrupt or cut off the words of the one imparting knowledge, for that is a cause of being deprived (of its blessings).

Recompense of Miserliness

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:
Since the miser is restrained from showing kindness, and prevented from doing good and acts of charity, his recompense is of the same kind as his deed: he has a constricted heart, deprived of openness and ease; his soul is narrow and lowly, he experiences little joy, but much anxiety, grief, and sorrow. His needs are rarely fulfilled, and he is not aided in achieving what he seeks.
