UN SPLENDIDE RYE FRANCAIS A VOUS SIGNALER CETTE SEMAINE (a Splendid French Rye Whisky to report to you this week…)

Personal & Channel Update (17/07/26-Revised & Reposted 18/07/26, with added pictures of my bloc fiber general wall unit, to show you my say is no joke) :
Totally p*ssed off, connection wise, as another technician visit did fail yesterday, most probably because the main company that has the "favor" of installing the fiber line system (it's a social building within a group of the same) did apparently cut the connection of 104 clients (including me) to install their own clients, and gave misleading infos to the one I've subded too...Every time I have to move stuff to give access, take a day off (and it's 6 months that this grotesque situation lasts), stress every month because I have to go to a specific shop to take a 4G key for my (still pour) connection (when they have some available & working for me), so forget about live shows, for instance...
So yes I'm fed up & feel like, also for other things here, even if I promised myself not to get political on this channel, but enough is enough, and more & more it seems that France is turning like a third-world country : Economically we were classified a decade ago as the 5th power, now I don't think so (7th or worse), with a lot of industries sold by...you know who, and, for instance, safety wise, we're on 99th rank world wide, also about the PISA classification (about students level) we're not good too (23th in maths, 28th in reading, 26th in sciences in general, all this out of 86 listed countries in it), and I'm not even talking about hospitals'state, with all the 17000 beds they did suppress years ago & over 10000 nurses they did suspended during c*word dictatorship (without any compensation), an over 8 % unemployment rate, almost no money for retired people, over 3400 billions of public debt, but billions of euros given for an « external » war, just saying...
So What are the changes ? Not much for you, because you already know I have put aside doing live shows (it means also I can"t be a guest of others, even if ok, not many other channels do invite me tbh...most recent one being Jon, for a Metal & Whisky pairing...), and the only good news is that, as the weather conditions seem a bit better after yesterday's storms & temperature decrease, videos with whisky tastings might resume soon, if the temperature stays under say 27/30°C, and I hope even less...Stay tuned ! And for those on holidays, enjoy !

(English Summary : Mr Gabriel from Maison Ferrand, who also makes Cognac & Rum was doing a Masterclass at La Maison du Whisky Odeon shop this July, 3, with 5 dry gins, including a distillery exclusive, and cocktails & some food to go with… and his passion did really came through his presentation-Note that more pics about this are available on my Instagram page) :

DAMNED HEATWAVE...33°C inside my attic flat today (with no AC) -copy of my Instagram post for those who can't see it (25/06/2026-on latest update, the max so far have been 35°C inside):
The weather forecast predicts 40°C for today & a possible decline of this heatwave (after some storms) for this Sunday (still with 30°C mind you) and these last weeks have been tough, especially that one. I'm worried obviously about my collection too, with probably a lot of cork broke to expect (& some content evaporation) once I'll be able to check some...
One cool thing though, despite I almost fainted due to no AC & too much crowd in that railway station where I briefly met my pal #michaelkush from #Canada on his wedding trip here across France (Congrats to you & to Anna again ! 👏👏👏) & this time (check out my latest related video you'll understand more) he brought me the single-malt from #SHELTERPOINT and not the 10 yo I was expecting but the 12 yo, so I'm excited to try it when it gets cooler here...Thanks so much Michael 🔥👍 as its impossible to get this here...🙏
#summerinparis #ovenambiance #toohotforwhisky #shelterpoint #canadiansinglemalt #craftwhisky #newincollection
PS: Obviously no video to be expected from me before a serious decrease of heat, or, if it gets more reasonable, at least, maybe one without tastings...and a post or 2 on Insta & here...(for instance I gotta tell you about a beautiful gin I recently got...). Anyway I hope you can handle heat on your side, and for those leaving already for vacation, have a nice time there with please a responsible drinking & lots of water ...

The RETURN of PAIRING MUSIC WITH WHISKY Series...Yes, ok, mostly « Metal & Whisky » I should say, but not only, just like this one, SIXTH WONDER :
Recently I discovered through #youtube suggestions a young band I didn't know at all, called SIXTH WONDER, founded in 2021 in Scotland & after hearing 3 tracks only (& already with their early single "Thorn"), I was quite impressed & hooked. Composed now of 3 members, singer Rebekah Kirk, bass player Dylan Mcvey, guitar player Nathan McDowall, the band consider itself as doing "Djent Pop" or "Alt-Rock" & a too quick random hear of one of their songs could lead you to think "oh it's another band doing nu metal/metal core with a female vocalist...", but a more careful listen will, in my opinion, prove you wrong.
Because, beyond some obvious influences of bands one could think of (from Evanescense to SpiritBox-for the latter because of the use of electronic sounds & high contrasts within the same song...), what strikes me in many Sixth Wonder’s songs is the unexpected mix between quite raw abrasive metal core music with scratchy-crunchy guitar sounds (bordering sometimes Deathcore, like in "Death Departed") & harsh vocals, and transitions, intro or breaks featuring EDM/Darkwave beats & keyboards sounds, loops, mesmerizing clean vocals (even the clean singing shows different nuances, as Rebekah has an amazingly wide register, from sensual clean lows or angry/deep/ferocious very low harshes to ethereal clean highs). When this mix is at its max, you get very catchy combinations in songs like "Rope Burn" or "Missile", or the so sophisticated hits "Saboteur", or "Your Way"), in which the layering of sounds, vocals & very often a particularly hooky atmosphere are a clear added value. All what I describe is I believe the result of, it has to be said, both great song writing & great production (in which 3 members of the band are involved). This & the band’s clever choices in almost all songs are lifting the band to another level, so beyond a single genre of music (I did even at times thought of a dream pop feeling to some of their songs). The EP has 4 songs & an interlude, and showcases the band’s huge potential already...
So, their strength is also that each song I hear from them brings me a different experience, a complex progressive & atmospheric and emotional journey & I haven’t been touched by a new band that way since the discovery of IOTUNN. Therefore I can’t wait to see what will come next for Sixth Wonder after their "Prologue" EP from 2025 & all the experience gathered on tour since. For that matter, I have to mention that the band did won some contests in UK, such as "Best Metal band" at the 2023 & 2025 Scottish Alternative Music Awards (SAMA). So yeah, I believe they’re one to watch !
THE PAIRING :
-SPRINGBANK official 12 yo "Cask Strength", bottled 13/02/2025, matured in ex-Bourbon (60 % of the recipe), ex-Sherry (35 %) & Rum (5 %), non-chill filtered, non coloured, 55,9 % :
Finding a whisky to be paired with such a powerful yet complex music was not easy, but the choice ended up being obvious, distillery wise, even if I did went first for another official SPRINGBANK, the 17 yo "Sherry Wood" (1997-2015), matured in fresh & refill Sherry butts & hogsheads, bottled at 52,3 %, but it appeared to be a bit too "shy" for Sixth Wonder's music. I could have gone for the SPRINGBANK official 5 yo "100 Proof" bottled 11/06/2025 at 57,1 %, fitting the bill of a young band, but I simply forgot as it still haven't found its place in normal shelves here...So, while those 3 whiskies haven't been reviewed in video yet, what can I say quickly about this pairing with the 12 yo Cask Strength ?
Both record & whisky have their powerful delivery, the band featuring already an amazing maturity for just 5 years of existence, and kinda laser guitar sound & rythmic section echoing to the fundamental tannic structure of the whisky, but also providing gourmet subtleties, complexity & richness (the music has a lot of layers, like the whisky, with here delicious ripe fruit, prunes, raisins & dark chocolate, between other things), yet still displaying a certain funkiness (not to mention the sooty peatsmoke), like the originality of the songs structures & soundscape (which they will develop too on other songs since like I said before).
So if this review convinced you to have a listen to what they do, please check out their Youtube account with the link below (& consider maybe supporting them through their Bandcamp account, as I did) :
youtube.com/@sixthwonderband
Selected songs to discover them (beyond this EP) :
-Ropeburn
-Thorn
-Saboteur
-Death Departed
-Your Way

AMAZING EVENING at La Maison du Whisky (Odéon shop) this 28/05/2026, conducted by Matthieu Acar (within the "Amicale du Whisky français") with as the guest pioneer of French whisky Warenghem distillery's manager David Roussier (as usual there are more pics on the Instagram version, mind you) :
I don't have the time to detail too much the expressions here & now, sorry (and it was tough to do all this with our heatwave, despite some AC), but we tried 4 Armorik expressions (3/4 being single-casks, the 2 first ones=virgin oak) & one cocktail using another Armorik, the "Chouchen", hence the mead cask it uses for the finishing...All nice, but my fav was the 14 yo Sherry cask from 2023
On the last pictures you can see what I brought back home, including one of the 4 "Sherry Quadrilogy" single-casks that were not part of the tasting eve, and the mini is a bottle for a gift of the same in tall...
Thanks to #lamaisonduwhisky #matthieuacar & #davidroussier (who signed the third SC bottling, a remaining of a nice WLP 2023 exclusive release that I couldn't get me before...) for this tasting which only costed us 10 €, and btw we had some snacks too, with an amazingly good bit of #galettesaucisse from the #breizhcafe nearby where I ended up dining with a cool other customer...

#EXTRAPOST / NEWS UPDATE (24/05/2026) Part 2 about BRUICHLADDICH only this time (as usual, there are more pics to see on Instagram than on Youtube, room wise) :
Crazy me, I was talking about BRUICHLADDICH (& mentioned in the live chat my connection with them & the McEwans-I added below some pics about them), through shows, etc...since around 2005) & completely forgot to show some bottles of my collection, my apologies @bruichladdich !
Anyway here is a wee overview of my collection (they’re all opened but I like to take pics once they arrive home), from older bottles & bit more new ones, and of their several brands, Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte & Octomore, and I could also have added their very nice gin The Botanist…(yep, I know, lots of bottlings not reviewed on video yet), apologies for the qualityof some pics as they can be quite old & yes I met Lynne in 2005 in Whisky Live Paris first, so long long time ago ! (pic only on Insta) I also added a pic of an art work of mine called « UB, 5 series (for real) », 2005, in which I did pour for fun & for real a bit of my laddie fifteen...hope you like this felt-pen & « collage » on pre-printed paper with print errors (I like to recycle stuff). Alas the picture will be cut on youtube but you can see whisky related art on my painter's website : gregoiresarafian.com
PS : For those who like me couldn’t make it to « Feis Isle 2026 » festival (or the Campbeltown one), I’d like to encourage them to watch this lovely Live show « Rock’ndaal » Bruichladdich’s event in the distillery’s Youtube channel, as it’s very interesting, with a lot of infos about the distillery restart & previous bottlings, great music and include a lot of banter as well :

#NEWSUPDATE (24/05/2026) : « It’s Getting Hot ! » (extended text from the upcoming Instagram version of it which will include more pics in it though) :
Damned new heatwave...As I was planning to record my « Talisker, before & now | 7 whiskies » Part 2 video this week end (being busy the 2 following ones, at least partly), all of a sudden it appearted it was too hot to reasonably do this, with now temperatures close to 30°C inside my flat, and 3/7 of the whiskies to cover being cask strength, I had to postpone it, my apologies...but here below you’ll see some of the whiskies I’ll talk about (yes the 57°North, the 18 yo, the 20 yo CS, but also others, including my favorite & indie 38 yo G&MP one I alas don’t own) & others related to « Campbeltown Whisky Festival », with bottles of my collection of Glen Scotia, Springbank & Glengyle, some already reviewed, some not yet...to help you wait.
PS : For those who like me couldn’t make it to « Feis Isle 2026 » festival (or the Campbeltown one), I’d like to encourage them to watch this lovely Live show « Rock’ndaal » Bruichladdich’s event in the distillery’s Youtube channel, as it’s very interesting, with a lot of infos about the distillery restart & previous bottlings, great music & some banter as well :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zlswo...
Aside from that, I’m happy to tell you that Arran 14 new 2026 release (46%) & new version as well (with that Palo Cortado Sherry finish I coudn’t even dream of) & that it is on my buylist, but not at the price a certain « house » asks for it here (84,90 €), as I see it available online at 20 €+ less from abroad...Benromach 12 yo Contrasts/Unpeated (46%) is also in my prioritary buylist, as the Armorik 10 yo Sherry Quadrilogy #2/Palo Cortado cask (52,1%) I already talked to you about, between other things. Warenghem wise (the distillery which produces Armorik single malt), I’ll attend a tasting held by its current director David Roussier next week, mind you, so stay tuned.
More later about other things later on...Enjoy your (possible like here prolonged 3 days one) week end, staying hydrated & with a responsible alcohol consumption please (yeah I know I should legally mention that more often…).
PICS LEGENDS (my Instagram will show bit more pics, as also it’ll be my 600th post) :
1/ Talisker 20 yo (1982-2003) OB/Ltd R./Bourbon casks, N.C.S., 58,8 %
2/ Talisker Vintage 1955 (bottled 1993, 38 yo), G.&MP/Cask Strength range, 3 sherry casks, 53,6 %

YOUTUBE / COMMUNITY POST (14/05/2026) For those not following me on social media / Pour ceux qui ne me suivent pas sur mes réseaux sociaux:
Nouvel article, en page d’accueil sur mon site internet de whisky : EDITORIAL No 40 : « EN FRANCE ON EXPERIMENTE AUSSI AUTOUR DU WHISKY ! » (new article in French on my whisky website, about experimenting in whisky).
English : I recently went to a tasting & heard of an experiment from Matthieu Acar, from La Maison du Whisky & its indie bottling range called « Version Française », and after it, Matthieu sent me a set of samples deconstructing an unofficial ARMORIK (Warenghem distillery, France), made of 4 different casks & he did a very geeky study about it which he also provided along with the 5 samples, which helped me understand the background of this whisky, and here are my thoughts about all this...
English : I am using Matthieu’s whisky tasting to have my say about experimentation in world whisky & French whisky, a quick survey evoking many of the issues & hopes about this question, with sometimes some quick examples as well...(Westland x 4 different toasts of barley in pic)
English : My take, based on my experience & ethics, about the new Dalmore tour controversy, beyond what I already said (as not everyone following me goes into same live chats, etc) / a pic of mine of Dalmore in 2018

Short news/rant (10/05/26) : Getting more & more frustrated : Crappy connection all this prolonged week end (even with the Wifi 4G key to compensate the moustrous 4 month+ breakdown, so very slow internet & youtube, still no TV, accessories missing for my new mic, etc...therefore some painful somatizations are back, preventing me from resuming tastings & written reviews too, so no content for you this week end I'm afraid & sorry...I just hope your week end was better than mine...
