Get In The Robot

To our beloved fans,

This is a message we hoped to never have to write. Yesterday’s upload was Get in the Robot’s last. We were as surprised to learn this as you probably are, so there will be no Get in the Robot swan song, no farewell tour. All we can do is say goodbye, and thank you so goddamn much.

Get in the Robot was created by Adrian Apolonio, Alex Batchelor, and Casey Gonzalez. We were anime fans with a vision: we wanted to create an inclusive, welcoming, politically engaged community for other anime fans like ourselves. Adrian and Casey wrote the channel’s first video in two hours after work, while Alex crafted the channel’s brand identity from scratch. Curt was our intern at the time and got roped into hosting, and Cristal just happened to be in the office when we were shooting the channel trailer. Nicky Fung edited the video up until minutes before upload, and the day we were set to launch, a literal steam pipe exploded in the street outside of our office. That’s how Get in the Robot was born. Through so much loving work, and in a shower of asbestos.

This channel was built on late night recording sessions, weekend-long anime binges, and yes, some blood, sweat, and tears. But more importantly, this channel was built out of our love for you, our community. We have loved reading your comments, meeting you at shows, hearing from you on social media, and above all else, just standing beside you as fans and members of this community. Though Robot will go dark after today, we’re still in this with you.

Curt, Dorrie, Cristal, Y. Chang, and Yedoye have put their hearts and souls into this community. They are each shining talents for whom Get in the Robot was just one of many impressive endeavors. You can hear Yedoye talk about the History of Anime on his new podcast for Crunchyroll, and follow him on Twitter and Instagram to see when you can catch his stand up. Curt has recently launched a new channel, Recreyo, and you can always find him over on his OG YouTube channel, Curtrichy as well as his streaming channel, CurtStreamy. Y. Chang just wrapped production on Cartoon Network UK’s I, Elvis Riboldi, and is lending his songwriting talents to virtual idol group Interlunium. You can find Cristal at Fujocon in a few weeks hosting a virtual panel on the queer subtext between Naruto and Sasuke (among other iconic anime rivals), on Instagram where she’ll be premiering her new celebrity talk show Midnight Geek Diner, and on Twitter, where you can learn about her music projects. Dorrie is streaming spooky game and VN let’s plays so you can follow her on Youtube (Dokidorr). You can also hear her voice audiobooks for Soundbooth Theater. Adrian is going to spend some time streaming before he launches his own channel, SlightlyOtaku. Find him on Twitch as ADiSiNS. Alex is the creative force behind Foxee Design, and she’s also working on a fantasy comic. Casey is writing a queer space romance and will be pitching her video idea, How One Piece Teaches Anti-Fascism, to anyone who will hear her.

We are heartbroken to be saying goodbye at a time when we had so many plans for the future. Thank you for being here with us on this ride. It has been an incredible pleasure, and an incredible privilege.

Oh, and if you have some extra time in your day now that we’re not uploading, check out the work that Chantel Ikotidem has done over on our Instagram. All of the dope photos you saw of the hosts were taken by her and you check out her work on her page @ikography. She’s been managing our social media accounts, and her most recent project has been compiling resources about how you can support the movement for Black lives. Anime is cool and all, but no one is free until Black trans people are free.

In love and solidarity,
Your Friends at Get in the Robot

Curt was someone I always looked up to, he was like a cool big brother, and I want to thank him and the rest of the Robot Crew for making me smile when I was down, I hope that whatever you do next you enjoy doing it, and thanks for the good times.

You guys will definitely be missed. Curt's 'moments' with Adrian laughing in the background were definitely gold. Best of luck wherever you collectively end up.

@HexBeeWonder

I remember when I first found this channel and it was almost brand new, only a handful of videos. Now its grown into something so much more just to be taken away. I will forever treasure your videos, the things I've learned, and my wonderful assortment of merch. Thank you all so much. Even though the channel may be done with, I'm still in the robot, and I'm not ever getting out.
