Recently read an article about "what caused the old witch hunts." People back in the day the were allegedly tripping absolute balls on a fungus called "Ergot". After weeks of consumption from poorly cultivated wheat or rye (what ergot would grow on), some people would have convulsions and horrible hallucinations, making everyone around them assume they were "possesed." The convulsions were so bad people had to be strapped down. When they took shelter in churches, they were "miraculously healed" after a few weeks because the churches didnt give them infected food. I cant stop thinking about this. Lmao
