SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS
-
On this day in 1942 an attempt was made to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect of the Holocaust.
-
History shows that sometimes rulers are despotic, evil-doing, or outright mad. When the ones who wield the power can't be dethroned by means of peaceful democracy, how do you end their reign? If the killing of one person might save many others from suffering or death, is there such a thing as 'justifiable murder'? This dilemma has been debated by scholars of ethics and law since antiquity, and it is the reason why today we list:
-
TIMEGHOST TOP 5: Tyrannicides
-
5. Park Chung-hee - South Korean President and oppressive dictator who installed himself through a military coup d’état and then changed the constitution to ensure his perpetual rule. On October 26th, 1979, he was shot to death during a dinner in a safehouse by Kim Jae-gyu, the director of the KCIA.
-
4. Hendrik Verwoerd - Far-right white supremacist who was the authoritarian Prime Minister of South Africa, and the architect of Apartheid. On September 6th, 1966, he was stabbed to death by parliamentary messenger Dimitri Tsafendas in the Cape Town House of Assembly.
-
3. Caligula - Roman Emperor who claimed to be a God, allegedly incestuous and sadistic. He executed any threat- including his relatives- and flung the Empire into financial crisis through extravagant spending. On January 22nd, 41 AD, he was stabbed to death by officers of the Praetorian Guard led by Cassius Chaerea.
-
2. Andronikos I Komnenos - Byzantine Emperor who took power by executing a 10 year-old and his mother. Condoned the Massacre of the Latins and executed all the Empire’s prisoners and exiles, including their families. On September 12th, 1185, he was killed by sword after being tortured and mutilated by a mob for three days.
-
1. Rafael “El Jefe” Trujillo - Dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic as President and unelected military strongman for 31 years that were one of the bloodiest eras ever in the Americas. On May 30th, 1966, he was ambushed in his car and shot to death by, among others, Antonio Imbert Barrera, Antonio de la Maza, and Juan Tomás Díaz.

@Pavlos_Charalambous

"Every day, you see a man you know committing a very serious crime for which millions of people suffer. You cannot take him to court or report him to the police because he is the law in the country. Would you remain silent and let him continue with his crime or would you do something to stop him? You are guilty not only when you commit a crime, but also when you do nothing to prevent it when you have the chance" Dimitris Tsafendas

Such is the fate of Rulers that rule poorly. The very people that they rule over will dispose of them, and in a manner that won't be too pretty. Be it Emperor, Queen, Vassal, President, Governor, Mayor, or Judge. It matters not.

Andronikos... Ok, this was a really impressive coincidence, yet I swear to all nine hells that I was reading this list and simultaneously listening to A Border Prince short narrative of a 40K book... And the name the author used for one of the first Astartes mentioned in the story was, THIS exact name, which I never remember hear of until that moment, from two distinctly separate sources... I know that in reality this type of topical coincidence is not actually as unusual as it initially felt at that moment of my realization ~ "WTF did he just say?... just two seconds before I began to read that exact same, obviously historically significant yet unfamiliar to me, name in this channels list.(Yeah I usually do utilize two devices worth of YouTube content alongside one another, especially when one is simply reading or writing... I recommend it, less chance of suffering through boring content when you double the access.) Yet it definitely means one thing will be absolutely certain to result from this specific coincidence; my ass is guaranteed to immediately research this guy's story and what, if any, implied traits that name may have... as I now want to know if that space marine was actually a loyalist or one of the fallen Angels going by an alias, and if any pseudonym is involved as a hint... Yep, bet ya didn't see that being where this comment was going to end up, huh... LoL. Neither did I though, so... heh.

No such list could be complete without Dong Zhou, a Chinese general from tha Han period who was particularly vile. His manner of death was likewise extreme. After being stabbed to death by his own guards, his body was lit on fire with a candle wick and is said to have burned for 3 days because Dong was so fat.

I'm surprised Hipparchus didn't make the list, although his brother Hippias, founder of the well known Hippeas brand of snacks, was the actual tyrant.

It may never be the right thing to do to kill someone but it can certainly be the least wrong outcome avaliable when capturing isn't an option. And really sometimes we should just be happy with making the least wrong choice avaliable to us it's not like humanity has a perfect record on that front.

Ulfric: Do you think its time I sent Balgruuf a stronger message? Galmar: If by message you mean shoving a sword through his gullet, than yes. Ulfric: Taking his city and leaving him in disgrace would make a powerful statement, don’t you think?
