hey u guys!! apparently youtube is gonna get rid of community captions for all videos on september 28 and i know the effects will be horrible for everybody who uses captions/subtitles for videos

i think accessibility to videos for everyone is important and the people who take the time to make the subtitles are beyond helpful and honestly its annoying that theyre trying to dismantle that work by having people pay for something that should always be free :/

theres a petition going around, if u could read/sign it, it would be appreciated !!

@maimai_6266

This is discriminatory against those who need the captions to use this platform. Thank you for spreading the word and I will definitely be signing the petition.

@Aino851

Why would they take them off? It makes no sense and would just anger a lot of people

@murmurcub

Sign it, I need them, English is not my mother language and some pronunciations are hard to catch for me, I believe that a lot of people in the same position as me need them as well.

? Youtube, what’s the reasoning behind this? What about people who need captions to understand like deaf people and people who speak different language from the video?

@ocyybit3133

Not only would this be a loss for those who are impacted in some way but also for those who are learning a new language / are looking to train their translation abilities. Overall I don’t see any benefits to getting rid of this function and a bunch of downsides.

@snail1726

@uniquelycreated0132

At this point it's like YouTube has nothing to do, and they just did this....what's the point of getting rid of captions...

@kieraforest6710

I love watching shows, videos and music videos from other countries. I would hate it if I couldn’t do that for free anymore.

How can they have such a dumb decision??? I'm literally freaking out. Dude, why??? I literally only met musicals like Dear Evan Hansen, Hamilton, Heathers etc BECAUSE OF THEM. I discovered a whole new passion and then they do that. I "manage" with my level of English, but what about people who don't know anything? How are they going to deal with this? This is horrible. I was even subtitling videos, like yours from Six and Beetlejuice and I love it. I don't want to stop anytime soon. After all, who knows if anyone saw my subtitles and fell in love with musicals like me? I really hope they’ll come back with that. Oh, and sorry for my bad English, I'm a Brazilian :) kkkk. Well, that's it. I just wanted to express my frustration. Oh, and i LOVE your videos! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for sharing!! signed and shared. As a paid professional caption editor, you'd think I'd be all for the end of community captions, but I'm firmly against the decision to revoke the feature. I got started in my career thanks to my volunteer experience creating captions on Youtube! Not only do community captions allow greater accessibility to HOH and deaf audiences, the program within Youtube is an incredibly useful educational tool. Small creators likely CANNOT AFFORD to pay for captions, the automatic captions are not very accurate or easy to read, and if people are willing to volunteer their time to help others Youtube should NOT take that opportunity away from them!! Of course if creators are capable of paying captioners, they SHOULD as it isn't easy work, and generally you get what you pay for as the saying goes. That said, volunteer subtitles on a platform like Youtube built by small creators is incredibly important. Nothing about this decision makes any sense and I am firmly against it. 6 months of Amara is nice but absolutely a band-aid solution to make people less angry.

@Pryxe

Oh no 😭 I love the captions! They help me focus on the videos because I space out a lot (dunno why) :/ and I love making them for other people (especially for non English videos making English captions
