LiL BO WEEP

October is Mental Health Month.
Most of us have heard of PTSD and it’s prevalence in veterans around the world. However, fewer people have heard of complex PTSD. I would like to shed some light on c-PTSD. I hope you find the info and my brief story useful.

What is complex PTSD
c-PTSD is a mental health condition that can occur after prolonged and repeated trauma, particularly due to childhood abuse and domestic violence.

Symptom cross over with PTSD
There is a strong cross-over in symptoms between PTSD and c-PTSD. People diagnosed with c-PTSD will experience the core symptoms of PTSD, as well as additional symptoms and disturbances in their thoughts, emotions and behaviour.

Some additional symptoms include:

- Feelings of shame and/or guilt
- Difficulty with emotional regulation
- Negative self-perception
- Relationship difficulties, social isolation
- Dissociation
- Loss of ones ‘system of meanings’
- Regular suicidal feelings

Due to its complex nature, therapy for c-PTSD is generally more extensive and intense than PTSD treatment.

Co occurring conditions
Trauma can result in a wide range of mental health and physical health problems, especially childhood trauma and family violence.
People who have survived trauma are at an increased risk of experiencing:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Addiction
- Eating disorders
- Suicide attempts,
- Fibromyalgia and fatigue just to name a few.

c-PTSD is still a relatively new condition, therefor some doctors aren’t aware of it.
The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) identifies complex PTSD as a separate condition, however due to politics, the DSM-V currently does not.
As a result, people who exhibit symptoms (such as emotional dysregulation, anger, dissociation and other symptoms) may be misdiagnosed with other mental health conditions, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), even though a c-PTSD diagnosis may fit their experience more closely.

If you have read up to this point, 5 stars for you ⭐️

Diagnosed with C-PTSD, nice to see awareness being spread, its rare to come up in conversation because I stay to myself mostly but when it does people are always so curious for some reason and you'd think it'd be easier to explain having lived with it for so long but it is such a personal topic and I had to go through it and cope on my own before ever getting help or clarification, again, just very nice to see some awareness

I have bi polar disorder and anxiety problems. Now, I think there is some post traumatic stress in me. Certain parts of my mood I can understand. I can grasp it. Other parts are way harder to grasp. I'm glad you bring these things up. I'm glad when anyone with a voice brings this up. I won't get into details but I'm a weird bi polar case. I was showing symptoms at 4 and a half. Witch is very early. That was in 92. In 97 I started taking heavy bi polar drugs to help with my rage and anger. I was 10. Alot of people think I'm lazy. Alot of people look down on me because of my mood disorder, they don't understand. I live everyday with suicidal thoughts. There's not a minute that goes by where offing myself comes to mind. I fight through tho. And anyone who's sees this and is fighting hard. Your not alone.

On the plus side, there could be somw amazing music to come out of this. I don't have cPTSD but I certainly have similar symptoms. There's no better feeling than emotionally connecting to someone through music.

I wrote a paper on this last year for my master’s program. There is hope for treating it by regulating the HPA axis with different modalities (acupuncture, psychedelics, NADA protocol etc.) but it is rather new. To anyone dealing with this hang in there, a lot of of research is being done currently and since the pandemic, it is becoming a more mainstream focus. It’s tough but you’re tougher!

. I’ve been diagnosed with C-PTSD and BPD, and recently chronic fatigue syndrome (fibromyalgia) and I honestly had no idea that my CFS was related to it. But I’ve been extremely physically Ill for the last year and they finally boiled it down to that

It’s a viscous trap to live in… more so when one has disassociated from most of the initial trauma, left to guess at what left them here
