One of the songs I chose to cover for my session with The Influences was “My Favorite Mistake” by Sheryl Crow. I got a karaoke machine for Christmas sometime during middle school. There were a bunch of current songs on the CDs that came with it & the one I remember always going back to and singing was this one, all by myself in the living room. I think my early love of this song that explains a lot about me and my writing, actually.
My dad bought “Tuesday Night Music Club,” her first record, because Sheryl was from the same little town that his father was from in Missouri. We listened to it all the time when it came out. I remember checking it out from the library when I was away from home and staying with my grandparents for a month in the summer because I missed listening to it.
I’m actually playing a Sheryl Crow Signature Gibson in this video...When I first moved to Nashville I did not have a proper guitar for gigs. I saved up money from nannying and found a listing for a dreamy jumbo country western on Craig’s List. I met the dude at Substop (RIP) and checked out the guitar, which ended up being the Sheryl Crow edition. He did not mention that in the listing and I was apprehensive about the nerdiness and quality signature edition guitars but this one sounded incredible and if I was to be a super fan of someone, it might as well be that badass. This guitar has been all over the world with me and I get compliments on it all the time. Good work, Sheryl!
If you made it this far in the post, maybe you love her like I do. Somebody put this woman in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame NOW!
