Any acoustic stringed instrument works for me as a portable music listening device, and I think it's the only kind that can truly be said to have lasted throughout time.

Personally, I carry around an entire band to play into in-ear monitors that I wear

Never happier than when I acquired my own, cheap little portable transistor radio, back in the mid-60s, at around the age of 12... It was on this paperback book-sized , tinny radio that I heard, between the the comings and goings of the distant signal of Radio Luxembourg - in the early 60s the only station playing pop music every night that you could hear in the UK - the first airplays of the now iconic 60s classics of popular music. This was mostly in secret, under the bedclothes after I was supposed to have gone to sleep, with school the next day.... and before the advent of the offshore 'pirate' radio stations that bypassed the UK's fusty old broadcasting laws, to bring us the all day, every day music we longed for.. Once that happened, the little radio went with me to school and I still remember hearing the Rolling Stones Hey You Get Off of My Cloud, and Satisfaction, for the first time in the playground, with my best friend and I listening spellbound, joining in the choruses... It went with me to the park and to the fairground, on buses and in coffee shops.. I lost it twice, and both times had it returned to the local police station, or to the carnival ride owners! How honest people were in those days... The sound of the 60s was for me, the tinny sound of that cheap little 'tranny', as we called them then (different meanings now!).. :-).

Two points to consider: Quality of Recorded Music & Portability. 1. For me, above all the quality of the recording is essential with music; IMHO Analog recordings capture vividly superior dynamic ranges and “feel” over digital. As the only designated analog device listed above my first answer is the Cassette Player [WalkMan] 2. PORTABILITY: For me, nothing comes close to the IPOD/MP3 with its elegant and simple controls and capacity to carry 40GB to 60GB of complete libraries of various styles of music and artists in my pocket!

I'm usually old school and I've never even owned an iPod but with Bluetooth and everything I'm going to go with my phone. No cords to contend with, any song you want instantly, and I can even speak a comment into the phone so some random dude in Romania knows what I think how about some about obscure rock song LOL

To me the Sony Cassette Walkman was a huge leap in technology from vinyl. I still have my Walkman along with roughly 200 cassettes that I collected over the years and it still works great. I grew up listening to vinyl recordings and I still play them from time to time. I love the pops, hisses, and cracking sounds of vinyl.

There are so many albums I would listen to the entirety of solely bc of my Walkman. I’d limit FF-ing to save my batteries. Now, I’m doubly grateful for it.

I loved my WalkMan and my DiscMan, despite the slipping and skipping. I know there is an obvious loss of sound on MP3 players, but, I love the portability they provide and the sheer quantity of music available to that media player. The truth is, if it is quality sound I’m looking for, I’ll go sit in front of my music room sound system not on any of the suggested players

iPod classic 6 or 7, 160 gb, 40,000 tunes, whats not to like? It's been every where with me since 2012. Whats wrong with using a phone? When you are places where the electricity frequently goes down why would you want to run your phone battery down even if you have back up. iPod makes perfect sense, no wonder they change hands for many times more than they cost when new. As Sting said, "When the world is running down, you make the best of whats still around."
