In the 1844 gave an account of a nun in a convent in France who began to meow like a cat. She din't know why she was doing it, but she couldn't stop.
Soon, other nuns began meowing, too. In days, the whole convent was afflicted.
This disrupted people in the surrounding neighborhoods and soldiers were finally called in to fix the situation. Their tactics were extreme but direct. The soldiers beat the nuns until the holy women promised to stop meowing.
During this era in France, cats were thought to be in league with the devil.
