Jam Campus

Today I taught these young students about finance and business management (Thanks, Junior Achievement!). Third graders. Bubbling with unfiltered curiosity about life. And PS4s.

To kick off the day, I went big on the classic “rookie-volunteer” question: what is your ideal job when you get older?

The most common answer? A YOUTUBER. Now I understand the power of social media, but I was shocked that over 35% of students have a dream of making money on YouTube. It’s replaced Hollywood. Kids don’t want to become film actors anymore. They want to create their own “movies” on their own terms. This YouTube career path is held on a high pedestal, amongst other student dreams of becoming astronauts, doctors, and Olympic ice skaters.

How fascinating. Technology has fully reconstructed career ambitions for an entire generation. In just a matter of a few years. And it’s not like tech is slowing down. No one knows what careers for future generations will look like. For 8-year-olds on the verge of 2019, YouTube could be a worthy option.

What do you think about YouTube as a career path? Do you want to be a YouTuber?

I want to be an electric engineer. That’s why I don’t want to become a YouTuber.
