Paul Davids

Hi folks, I need your help! Can you fill in this poll?

When learning new songs, which option describes you best (if you could only choose one)?

Thanks!

It'd be interesting if you could do a breakdown on how to actually transcribe a song yourself without getting notes wrong etc. that'd be amazingly informative!

@jeffmetal98

Both! Personally I’ve found myself using tabs as a starting point, mostly because they are inaccurate, and then doing my own transcribing.

A third answer would be great. I think a lot of people will do both depending on the quality of the Tabs

Learning from watching guys like you and from tabs. Slowly improving at playing by ear. Keep up the good work Paul 😀

Depending on how much time i have, i prefer to use my ear but sometimes time doesn't permit and then tabs give a good head start

@lapinemike

I have always figured it out by ear. But when YouTube started, it was helpful to watch how others played the song. I learn best by ear and watching others. Your videos are always with watching!!

When i hear a song, i try to figure it out myself first then i check the tab/youtube covers, just for comparison 😁

I learn by watching other people

There needs to be a third option. I go by ear 99% however at times I do refer to tabs for some solos or when I can't quite figure out a songs tuning or some oddball jazz chord.

Rocksmith paved the foundations for my guitar learning, after 3 years of it I now mostly use sheet-tabs and play by key

When I started playing guitar I had fun with reading tabs. Now I have more fun when I learn the songs by ear. It might take a while, but in the end it's a really entertaining way to practise my ears. Although I still have some difficulties with some songs. I remember I was trying to learn Sails of Charon by the Scorpions and I watched a video with Uli Roth playing the part I wanted to learn. It was so helpful to see the technique he is using to play it.

Youtubers help me a lot. There are several that go over the songs very carefully, and with great patience. I really appreciate what they do.

When I was first learning guitar, there was no internet, and I never saw tabs until many years later. The only way to learn a song was to listen to it and figure it out. I even got to the point where I could figure out Joni Mitchell's tunings by listening for the open strings. So - great for developing your ear!

Transcribing songs yourself is a much better learning experience for me. Listening and figuring it out not only trains your ear but your ability to judge notes on the neck of you guitar

@8varium5

I love to watch people just play the song and putting the chords on a side. That way I know what key the song is in, and also can compare if the song is accurately transcribed. I loved your Yellow by Coldplay lesson. Thank you very much for that.

@jani11

Where is the option where i find a youtube tutorial, then perfect it myself?

@jsimes1

Now I learn from tab. Back in the day (I'm old - 54) I used to sit in front of the cassette deck with my guitar and hit rewind over and over again learning a song. For me getting the words down was even more difficult but the same process. When CDs came out the rewind thing became much more difficult and then I found tab!

I used to mostly do tabs/chords. And allthough I still use them now and again, I mostly use youtube these days. Seeing someone play and explain a song is much more beneficial :)

Hi David. I absolutely LOVE your channel! I will always use my ear unless I am in a hurry to figure something out for a gig
