We celebrate the birthday of Mavis Staples (July 10, 1939), the civil rights icon who started her musical career started as a member of the legendary Staple Singers, and went on to form an equally iconic body of work in her solo career as well. Staples was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2017.
