The Sea The Sea

We’ve been waiting for the right moment to collaborate again with Zachary Johnson and the Made Shop after Johnson first hand-painted the rotoscoped music video for our song “Waiting”. There was something in the title track from this new album, Stumbling Home, that kept eliciting images in the style of his oil paintings, so we reached out.

For “Stumbling Home”, the idea was to now place the viewer up close on the streets of an unknown city, walking amidst crowds of people. Rather than the continuous motion of “Waiting”, here he wanted to focus more on fleeting moments, lit up and frozen in fading vignettes, while still maintaining some sense of a roving camera eye. We continued to talk, and the idea formed of only painting the various people, unmoored from their surroundings, each passerby an individual moving against an inky emptiness of black.

In a strange way, the concept rang true to the intention of the song—that our most meaningful moments often don’t seem that way at the time. They can look unassuming from the outside, and sometimes even from the inside. In the song, we imagine those moments as flickers, like old light from stars, in some sky a million years from now. Thinking of that now as a love song to the ways we all continue to move through the world together, and all that we find in the falling, the tripping over ourselves along the way. “We’re all just walking each other home” — Ram Dass
