this is a very long post regarding deukae’s ca. i know that me addressing issues like these is not the reason why you’re subscribed to me, but i cannot stay silent knowing that what’s happening right in front of me is wrong.
from the way i understand it, dreamcatcher company/happyface entertainment as well as deukae members are appropriating the culture of natives because they profit off of twisting the cultural meaning and context of dreamcatchers (a sacred object from the Native American tribe, Ojibwe) by using dreamcatcher as the group’s name and logo as well as using dreamcatcher imagery in their album covers, special clips, and mv’s.
a lot of natives, specifically Ojibwe, have spoken up on deukae’s ca (and use/ownership of dreamcatcher objects and imagery in general) and they have said that it is offensive, disrespectful, and that it is indeed cultural appropriation (sources below). this makes sense when you take into account that their people and culture have suffered for making the same exact object that DC and DCC/HFE are profiting off of.
there is no use trying to defend the girls and the company when the ONLY people who have a say in this (natives) have already stated that what DC and DCC/HFE have been doing is wrong, no matter how “normalized” it is in SK. please stop speaking over their voices. they deserve to be heard.
if you’re a new somnia, you should know that the dreamcatcher name and imagery has always been an issue, since HFE’s announcement of the “dreamcatcher” name of their new girl group. for the longest time, fans and nonfans have blamed it on the ignorance of the company. they emailed the company in their company email over the years but DCC/HFE have willfully ignored it and have made no official statement until now.
the issue has recently reached a boiling point when jiu and sua stated that they directed their latest special clip, which features a scene of them with dreamcatcher objects. now, many somnias including me feel that emailing the company has made no significant progress as both the company and the girls are still continuing to be ignorant on the issue. now, we resort to informing the girls of the issue directly through their social media accounts and weverse. i know it’s not ideal as it could easily be misinterpreted as hate, but we’ve run out of options as DCC/HFE refuses to acknowledge it. we just have to make sure that our phrasing is respectful so they know we’re coming from a place of love and concern (there are readily made templates for this, source below).
i know that it is difficult to accept that the seemingly perfect members of our favorite group, who radiate nothing but happiness and kindness, can hurt others out of ignorance. but as their fans, and as the people who love them, it is our responsibility to inform them of the hurt they’ve caused to other people, most especially if it’s unintentional.
the fact that DC and DCC/HFE have offended and hurt a lot of natives should be enough for you to want to take action. but if for some reason, that is not enough, then i have one thing to say to you: if you truly love the members of deukae, you will do your part in informing them on the issue instead of turning a blind eye.
i know that the legalities do not really allow for both the group and the company to change the “dreamcatcher” name, so, i’ve decided to pick my battles. personally, i believe that we can see real change if we focus on pressuring DCC/HFE for a logo change (not using dreamcatchers as logo anymore, could be changed to the one in the lightstick) and as well as eradicating the use of ANY dreamcatcher imagery in future album covers, mv’s, special clips, etc. it is also expected of DCC/HFE to issue an official statement addressing the issue.
we know that the girls are good people, but that doesn’t mean they can do no wrong. i believe they will listen to us and change for the better. so, i implore you all to please do your part in fighting for what’s right.
if you disagree with me even after seeing my reasoning and looking at multiple resources available online about the issue, INCLUDING statements of natives, then feel free to unsubscribe.
lastly, thank you to all the natives and somnias who continuously strive educate others.
