deuxae

hello, i hope everyone’s doing good.

this is a very long post regarding deukae’s ca. i know that me addressing issues like these is not the reason why you’re subscribed to me, but i cannot stay silent knowing that what’s happening right in front of me is wrong.

from the way i understand it, dreamcatcher company/happyface entertainment as well as deukae members are appropriating the culture of natives because they profit off of twisting the cultural meaning and context of dreamcatchers (a sacred object from the Native American tribe, Ojibwe) by using dreamcatcher as the group’s name and logo as well as using dreamcatcher imagery in their album covers, special clips, and mv’s.

a lot of natives, specifically Ojibwe, have spoken up on deukae’s ca (and use/ownership of dreamcatcher objects and imagery in general) and they have said that it is offensive, disrespectful, and that it is indeed cultural appropriation (sources below). this makes sense when you take into account that their people and culture have suffered for making the same exact object that DC and DCC/HFE are profiting off of.

there is no use trying to defend the girls and the company when the ONLY people who have a say in this (natives) have already stated that what DC and DCC/HFE have been doing is wrong, no matter how “normalized” it is in SK. please stop speaking over their voices. they deserve to be heard.

if you’re a new somnia, you should know that the dreamcatcher name and imagery has always been an issue, since HFE’s announcement of the “dreamcatcher” name of their new girl group. for the longest time, fans and nonfans have blamed it on the ignorance of the company. they emailed the company in their company email over the years but DCC/HFE have willfully ignored it and have made no official statement until now.

the issue has recently reached a boiling point when jiu and sua stated that they directed their latest special clip, which features a scene of them with dreamcatcher objects. now, many somnias including me feel that emailing the company has made no significant progress as both the company and the girls are still continuing to be ignorant on the issue. now, we resort to informing the girls of the issue directly through their social media accounts and weverse. i know it’s not ideal as it could easily be misinterpreted as hate, but we’ve run out of options as DCC/HFE refuses to acknowledge it. we just have to make sure that our phrasing is respectful so they know we’re coming from a place of love and concern (there are readily made templates for this, source below).

i know that it is difficult to accept that the seemingly perfect members of our favorite group, who radiate nothing but happiness and kindness, can hurt others out of ignorance. but as their fans, and as the people who love them, it is our responsibility to inform them of the hurt they’ve caused to other people, most especially if it’s unintentional.

the fact that DC and DCC/HFE have offended and hurt a lot of natives should be enough for you to want to take action. but if for some reason, that is not enough, then i have one thing to say to you: if you truly love the members of deukae, you will do your part in informing them on the issue instead of turning a blind eye.

i know that the legalities do not really allow for both the group and the company to change the “dreamcatcher” name, so, i’ve decided to pick my battles. personally, i believe that we can see real change if we focus on pressuring DCC/HFE for a logo change (not using dreamcatchers as logo anymore, could be changed to the one in the lightstick) and as well as eradicating the use of ANY dreamcatcher imagery in future album covers, mv’s, special clips, etc. it is also expected of DCC/HFE to issue an official statement addressing the issue.

we know that the girls are good people, but that doesn’t mean they can do no wrong. i believe they will listen to us and change for the better. so, i implore you all to please do your part in fighting for what’s right.

if you disagree with me even after seeing my reasoning and looking at multiple resources available online about the issue, INCLUDING statements of natives, then feel free to unsubscribe.

lastly, thank you to all the natives and somnias who continuously strive educate others.

@habs1784

Hello fellow Insomnias. I felt like I should weigh in with my opinion on this matter as I am a member of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and also a proud Insomnia. There has always been a debate within my community about Non-Natives usage of Native imagery, arts, music, dress etc, and there has never really been a consensus. Some are against it, some are okay with it. That being said, for me, I like to examine the intent behind the usage. It is my belief that DCC/HFE does not intend to ridicule, demean or disrespect my culture with their usage of the term "dreamcatcher" and their usage of dreamcatcher imagery. We too often face racial prejudice and have a very painful history with European settlement and subsequent forced assimilation. My grandparents grew up in a time when the Government was actively committing cultural genocide against my people. They told them not to speak their language, not to sing their songs, confiscated their arts, their names and murdered thousands without any ramifications. So for me, to see that my culture endured and is being showcased on the other side of the planet makes me tremendously proud. In fact, one of the things that drew me to the group was their name, as I felt a personal connection. Yes they are profiting from it's usage, but to me their is a difference between cultural sharing and cultural appropriation, and the fact that people are now talking about dreamcatchers and researching about it's history and the history of my people is a great thing!

@jwibao

I get your point but what if even tho we tell them in many ways by sending it to the members personally but then DCC/HFE stopped them? I mean like i said i get your point but they way you worded it by saying as if the girls is on the blame side is something that i can't accept. You do know right, i believe you've been kpopers for a long time too that company has the right to steer their artists as much as they could that's written in the contract and what about the contract say that the girls won't have the rights to speak their opinion or talking about their own issue without the company permission? Have you thought about this too? By this time i believe the girls alrd know what was happened but i don't think the girls would stay silent over this IF the company didn't ask them too. We all know just how much they love us the fans, right? I think instead of messaging them personally and making it a mass which could be an annoyance for the members who doesn't have the ability to answer all of it, how about we ask the help for Kornetz to mass email the company? Tho i'm not sure whether they're still ignore us but let's hope one day they would hear us. Cultural things are complicated and believe me i've been seeing it through how many times other countries trying to steal or even plagiarizing and even CLAIMING our cultural (i won't say where am i from cuz i don't want to spark a debate) so i'm telling you i don't have any cons here over your statement. I just want you to correct some of your words. Thank you.

@dimacucu4908

People get offended by everything today, just fuck em, who cares, whe live a mixed society whit thousands of different cultures, its inevitable that someone will bring something from other, its cultural sharing not appropriation, for example if im white and i open a sushi restaurant it doesn't mean im a racist, or if my chinese friend call his son Luca because he likes italian culture it doesn't mean he is racist against italians, come on this is ridiculous

@imwhippedcreamforjiyoo6459

Then if we tell dcc/hfe to change the meaning of Dreamcatcher (sacred accessory) to just Dream Catcher (abt catching dreams) would it still be ca?

@linet6555

Thanks for the info but also, I’m not Native American but those of you who are, isn’t this kinda like cultural appreciation? Cause I’m Mexican Ik that if someone had my culture in a MV or pic I would be proud specially cause ik that Hispanics are HATED by some Americans but this is just my opinion on the matter but please guys let me know what you think

@omgthisimg1488

I agree with your points, but isn't the use of dreamcatchers by this kpop group a way of more popularizing about the ethnic tribe. Till last night I had no idea about Ojibwe culture, and now I am one more who knows about their plight and trying my best to help them. So cant a measure be taken where the HFC acknowledges the culture and shares a profit, to help groups and foundations. Because get this, making them stop using dreamcatcher and then soon everyone is going to only make more people unaware of the tribe and their history. I dont want to belittle anyone or be ignorant, maybe I haven't worded it correctly but I am just putting this opinion out there. At the end of the day we got to respect the tribe and acknowledge their feelings🙏

@plorsomnia

I swear people are more upset and care about this than the actual culture being supposedly appropriated.

@damidoxgaming3891

Yet for every 1 ojibwe person I've seen against the name I've seen 2 ojibwe people who support the name and logo but since narrow minded people can't see that and want to ignore the ones that do like the appreciation I will kindly do the same to you, it's been nice watching your channel but now I must go

@TheGroovyJones

What do the Ojibwe et. al. want us to do about it? They need be the ones who decide how their allies handle the situation so other cultures don't take their voice away by determining what is offensive for them. Has anyone asked the Ojibwe if they want us spending our time and energy on a music group on the other side of the world, or something in the US that can make a material difference to their people right now, or what? You can call this disagreeing with you but I didn't unsub because cancelling is not reasonable as the ONLY way for people to deal with disagreements.

Wow, I didn’t know half of this stuff! Thank you for sharing this! I’ll keep on reading all of the info!

@user-ed6nw9tt8t

I'm against it at first but i realized if dcc keep using the logo this issue will just continue over and over again so something must be done to stop it. They have to apologize to NA and change the logo. But i really hope fans would stop saying hurtful things..some of us are angry because of what they said to our girls..not because of the logo change petition..

@bingybingy2592

How can diversity be a good thing then. Diversity is supposed to encourage different cultures to assimilate into each others cultures and learn and experience each others heritages, yet, as soon as you take an interest or use something specific to their way of life then, it's cultural appropriation. What are the rules? as I give up.

@haddddddes

y'all really wanna tear the group down huh? northamericans are truly a different breed

@boaqx000

Let's all hope that the company would do something about this. I have nothing else to say, but actions speak louder than words. Let's all hope for the best.

@Gotcha869

Regardless of what the company does, I think it would help if us as InSomnias start refering to them as DreamCatcher and definitely stop using any Native American imagery (like certain logos) in the fanmade materials. Let's lead by example, people.

@paragonca9736

I will never understand this approach. In my mind, it's more like "ooh I really like this thing that this group of people have made, I think it's cool enough that I want to plaster it all over my entire brand." Same with sports teams using native-related terms as their names: it's a tribute, an homage. The world would be a much better place if people stopped being so victim-minded.

4 years ago | 31

@Mikaeila100

hi! I completely agree, though I don't know if they can change the name of the group. maybe they could stop using the images and apologize, but I don't know if they can change the name

@rapababa7466

You make it seem as if people only buy dreamcatcher albums because of the design , how can you say they are profiting from natives, when everyone in kpop knows what make them sell well is their skills... dance, rock genre, unique style, personalities. From 2018 utill now their comeback story line has nothing to do with natives. They use a stylized logo that stopped to resemble a traditional dreamcatcher. But to claim that all their profit it's because a logo you are very wrong.

@Why.Just_why

Dystopia Road to Utopia Limited Edition album cover basically used the Olympia stadium in Greece,the similarity is obvious. I didnt see anyone getting offended, and as a Greek,neither did I
