I actually think it could be quite good series. Tolkien Estate is quite strict about any kind of adaptations of Middlearth, whether it is in the games or movies. Its kinda different than in case of Star Wars, cause they can not change already existing stories, not like Disney deleted half of the canon to put their crap in its place. Also there is at least one thing that will certainly be good, Howard Shore has recently been asked to compose music for the series.

I'm not very optimistic. At first I thought it was going to be amazing, since then there has been 4 years and my mind changed. They don't say anything, I'm scared of watching something that isn't made in the name of Tolkien, etc. Etc.
