As some of you may know, in August last year our dear friend and Naked Noise co-founder, Joe Lyons, took his own life. There were no warning signs and he never reached out for any help, he was suffering in silence and we were all none the wiser. Words cannot express how much we miss him.
His best friend, Roman Kemp, shared Joe’s story and others’ on the BBC documentary “Our Silent Emergency” last night. For those who are able to access BBC iPlayer, it really is essential viewing - www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p098hsv6/roman-kemp-…
Not only is this film insightful in its discussions about male mental health and suicide, but on a deeply personal level, it reminds us of the Joe we knew and loved. The golden-eyed, loveable lad with a spurious cockney accent and a smile that could launch a thousand ships.
Echoing Roman’s message, we truly urge all of you to reach out to your friends, families and colleagues, to ask the simple question: “are you okay?”. Then ask it again. We understand that mental health conversations can be difficult, but hope this documentary is a step towards them becoming normalised. It is imperative that we educate our peers on how to reach out if they are struggling, and to assure them help is available, no matter how big or small the problem.
In the coming months, we are going to be re-launching this channel in Joe’s honour, but in the meantime, given that today is St. Patrick’s Day we feel this song is a fitting tribute.
Here is Hozier covering Van Morrison’s Sweet Thing. Elegantly pulled together out of thin air with about one day’s notice… sorry we mean “Executive Produced” by the late great Joe Lyons. This one’s for you fella!
