“Hurry up and wait” is an expression used on film sets after everything is set up, the camera is ready to roll, and the crew just needs to wait for the shot to happen.
Feels similar to this new phase we find ourselves in right now. The panic and hurry of those first few weeks have settled into something else. Something that requires a lot of patience, because we don’t know exactly how long it’s going to last, or how many times we’ll have to redo the shot.
We aren’t exactly sure when this will end, or if when this period “ends” and we “start” again, we'll have another outbreak and need to go right back to where we started with shelter in place. Like we just learned from Singapore.
I feel like I'm in some strange film, on a road where no one knows where we are headed.
I think that’s why the idea of thinking of time in week-long segments and giving them clear boundaries, clear beginnings, and endings has been so powerful. If you are able to be sheltered in place, now might be a good time to try it.
This Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day. I will be giving my talk, based on my book 24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week, on time, rest, nature, and boundaries around screen use and taking time to turn them off during this period. The talk is tomorrow, at 11am PT/2pm ET. Free registration is here.

Wanted to let you know about my husband, Professor Ken Goldberg, weekly discussion about “COVID-19, Robots, and Us.” You can join him for a discussion with experts from the robotics and health community here.
I wanted my neighbors to know I was smiling when I saw them on my daily walk, so here’s my mask. I know it looks a little uncanny but most people laugh when they see it.
We need to laugh as much as possible through this situation.
