Old Man of the Woods

Youtube censorship updates: our video "Mushroom Identification for Beginners: Spore print Making," published on March 2020, was removed by Youtube on Jan 23, 2021. Censors believe it violates their “harmful and dangerous policy” and have rejected our appeals. For the record, the video only talks about how to make mushroom spore prints as the very first step of identifying wild mushrooms. I have to stretch the concerning policy support.google.com/youtube/answer/2801964 a lot to imagine how this particular video can be interpreted as unsafe. Any video could be potentially dangerous by the same standard. Youtube could only fulfill its job of making itself “a safe place for all” when it removed all contents published on the platform. But dictators are not to be reasoned with, and we knew that well enough. Hard not to see where this Youtopia is going. — L.

@untamedscience

@OldManoftheWoods

Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement. I am grateful. At first I was pretty sure the taking down was a technical mistake and the video would be restored soon. Nope. A human censor decided to remove it for good out of safety considerations. So Youtube is serious about parenting creators and viewers, as in a dystopia movie. It is unclear if this old video was flagged by someone to Youtube for review. I’d rather it be Youtube’s own paranoid algorithm. Reporting things/ppl that you don’t agree with to an unchecked power is sad. It should not be part of American culture, or any human culture.

A spore print is a very important guideline.

They leave the rule as ambiguous as possible so they can target any channels they wish.

@87channels

For the record, I have a 40 second long video about the human nose's evolution that's demonetized and age restricted for "being grotesque". And then another one about the science behind nicotine for "encouraging people to ingest dangerous chemicals". YouTube's flagging system is completely flawed

That’s ridiculous, your videos are informative and very well done. There are hundreds of mushroom videos that are a lot more inappropriate,

That sucks bro, YouTube can go and..... YouTube has reviewed this comment and has found it violates our “Terms of Service” and was removed.

Platforms have been going apeshit removing mushroom accounts lately. Why do the want to censor the knowledge of mushrooms?

@dustyandsneezing

Your channel is one of the best mushroom channels on YouTube! They just don’t want people learning their land! Mass censorship is going on!

So so so frustrating :( Love all the incredible education you offer on your channel, this is such a foolish move on Youtube's part.

@philipcaseyacalloway204

How disappointing, I'm sorry your education is being censored. Your channel has always aired on the side of caution and to consult multiple sources in an effort to identify mushrooms beyond a shadow of a doubt. Best of luck with this dispute.
