The Puerto Rico Self-Determination Act of 2021, calls for creating a 'status convention' made up of delegates elected by Puerto Rican voters. The delegates would be responsible for coming up with long-term solutions for the island's territorial status — statehood, independence, a free association or other options beyond its current territorial arrangement. How should Puerto Rico's future be determined?

I grew up in PR at 21 years of age I decided to move to the mainland for better opportunities. Well little did I know the lack of knowledge mainland Americans have of a territory that has been part of the states since 1898. The questions and assumptions were incredible, which brings me to the education topic , PR as well as USA need a education overhaul. It is time for us American citizens to get an education that unifies and prepares us for a better future. FYI let PR decide on their future.

I have a lot of friends and a few family members in PR, and from what I've gathered, they don't want statehood, but they know that things need to change. The greatest thing us mainlanders can do us push to abolish the disastrous Jones Act.

Make d.c a state. Give the territories the chance to decide for themselves. Then make a new flag. We've had some "patriots" ruin the old one. It was already pretty tattered and stained but they finished it off.

They should just have a mandatory election where every single citizen votes and ask them directly. With all the shenanigans that get pulled there I would be worried about the delegation being manipulated.

I think state hood would be the best option but if the self determination act passes and the people choose a different path I will stand with the people of Puerto Rico in their choice.

I don’t know enough about Puerto Rico politics to say for sure, except that the current arrangement isn’t good. I’m all in support of allowing the people of Puerto Rico determine what’s best for them and their island.

As long as the delegates are chosen in a non-rigged way that the majority of the Puerto Ricans (including people who are not well off) decide.

Either make them a state or let them declare independence. Give them and all US territories proper representation.

This'll basically give them access to federal funds and a place to evacuate.... sealevel rise is excelerating and the storm's are growing in intensities

They should get to self-determine. They have had no say in a country they belong to for so long.

I think puerto rico should be independent of the US I think we should give D. C. statehood and give Hawaii back to the natives since we illegal annexed Hawaii.

As someone with Puerto Rican heritage albeit A bit removed from the island experience, but who grew up I loves his Island Home of Hawaii, I am personally against statehood for Puerto Rico without a recognition of the ability for Hawaii to determine its own sovereignty, these territories who decide to be part of the US as a state should not have the option taken away from them to decide to no longer to be a state, it is always the peoples ( natives) to decide their futures at any and all points, this should be different from the rest of the United States because they were American (for the most part) that made them integral parts of the country. Hawaii should have the option to pursue going back to territorial status or be a protectorate.

Can we get rid of the Jones Act?

@troyjerkins8139

None of the options matter if the debt the island is saddled with isn't taken care of. Almost every financial protection passed excludes Puerto Rico so they can't even declare bankruptcy.

Let Puerto Rican residents decide. Personally, I believe Puerto Rico would be better off in the long run if they become a State than going independent. A little background, growing up I lived longer in Puerto Rico than anywhere else and am familiar with the commonwealth/statehood/independence debate there. I'm certain the balance of those groups has changed in the past 20 years but would be surprised if the majority would vote for independence. Personally, I'm against the USA having territories. Every territory should be given the choice to become a State or be independent.

@nura1627

Didn't the current PR Delegates in Congress propose a separate bill for statehood? Seems to me we already know how their elected representatives believe the people want to proceed.

@publicguy1664

I think statehood is the best answer. It would put them under proper federal funding with social safety net, hopefully make Americans a little less blind to its imperialism and allow full proper enfranchisement and citizenship. Having their own government could be good, but how its gone so far has just been turned into another property for wall street and vulture capitalists to raid.

The people voted in favor of Statehood. The US should honor that. If it wasnt for that I would have voted differently

@brandonm949

Voting for delegates is just an extra step that can only mess things up. Just have a referendum that would give them official statehood if it passes. Let the people decide directly.

It's funny how many people think they know better what Puerto Rico needs than Puerto Ricans do.
