I grew up on American Bandstand but by the time SOUL TRAIN came out I was much older and American Bandstand WASN'T the same anymore. They were both on the TV but I watched SOUL TRAIN while I would only listen to American Bandstand.

Dick Clark seen me sing one time, I walked upstairs where he was sitting, i said did you like my singing?, & Dick Clark looked at me and says "that was you"? I said ya, all the sudden he said; "that's some good singing,! That compliment put me on cloud 9. Years later in 1983 I went with my family in a Bus, we traveled around and took turns singing. I really miss them days. I was 26 yrs old back then. And now I'm in my 60's. I wish I was out singing again

I liked them both the same because they were an escapism from the realities of my life.

They were both different cultures of American popular music. Soul Train was R&B oriented, while American Bandstand was slightly nuanced, balancing Pop, Rock with shots of R&B. Both groundbreaking programs, the likes of which we'll never see again. RIP, Dick C, and Don C.

I would say bandstand for the music I preferred at least until disco turned me off. ST of course also had some great music but I preferred AB variety of music mid sixties to early seventies. I also think Bandstand was more like regular teenagers dancing, some very good others not so much. ST had the better dancers but seemed older crowd and almost "professional" whereas AB just seemed like kids. I used to go to a tavern for lunch on Saturdays after chores and sit at the bar. This was in early 1990s and crowd was predominantly white guys in their 30s to 60s. Every Saturday that tv set would be tuned into Soul Train so these old farts could google at the dancing skills of the female dancers..if you get my drift.
