Today is an important day in the “I Love Lucy” community because it’s William Frawley’s birthday! He was born on this day (February 26) in 1887 in Burlington, Iowa. He loved performing from a very young age and he started his career as a talented vaudeville performer. When he first heard about “I Love Lucy,” he phoned Lucille Ball and asked to be on the show. Some things had to be worked out (including Bill’s alcoholic behavior), but thank goodness he got the part because I just can’t imagine “I Love Lucy” without William Frawley as Fred Mertz.
