Hitchcock Presents

Fact of the Day #9!

Happy Friday everyone!

Hitchcock was so proud of the twist in 'Psycho' that he refused to allow theatres to let anyone in to see the film once it started.

Obviously, he went to great lengths to make sure nothing related to the film's plot twist was spoilt. As well as this, he also attempted to buy all copies of the novel that the film was based on to keep the plot twist fresh. Interviews, as suspected, with the stars Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh were prohibited.

Lobby cards at the theatres specifically displayed the message, "We won't allow you to cheat yourself. You must see PSYCHO from the very beginning. Therefore, do not expect to be admitted into the theatre after the start of each performance of the picture. We say no one—and we mean no one—not even the manager's brother, the President of the United States, or the Queen of England (God bless her)!”

Well... what do you think?

Hitchcock knew how to keep people in suspense! I feel like if I were him I would want to try to control the crowd/audience in similar ways. It sucks when you create something amazing and people "ruin" it by experiencing it differently than you intend and then go and spoil it for others who haven't had the chance yet. I totally get that....

I remember that we were admonished not to tell anyone the ending, and we didn't. That was back in the day of honor.

All of this (and more of his thoughts, strategies, and struggles with the picture AND his personal life) are featured in the film about him, entitled "Hitch". I recommend it to everyone!

People forget that the real shock of the movie was when Janet Leigh’s character dies. She’s only in the movie for 40 plus minutes and then killed. That threw audiences off because what they thought was the main character of the movie is brutally murdered out of nowhere

I remember the same device was used for the off Broadway play the little shop of horrors prior to the film version in 1986. The media asked for the ending to be kept secret, so each audience could be surprised I remember well the song 🎵 don't feed the plants and the branches coming down for the patrons

Gone are those days. Entire movies are revealed in “previews” now. NO ONE can keep a secret now.

Whatever happened to the money Janet Leigh's character stole? She NEVER got to return it because she was murdered🤔🤨

@gulmerton2758

So the Queen of England was entitled to have a « God bless her! » but the President of the US didn’t get a « God bless him »?!!!Nor the manager’s brother?!!! Wow!
