Today morning our father drew his last breath at 7:00am and lost his life to cancer. His battle against liposarcoma lasted about 15 years with multiple tumor removal surgeries until his body could no longer fight against the rapidly growing tumor. Throughout the years, each surgery took a heavy toll on his body but his fighting spirit would not accept defeat. Against all odds including the doctor’s disapproval, he flew from Korea back to the states to live out his last days in the comfort of his family. Through the grace of God, his strength and health was preserved until he landed. Every single detail of the events that occurred between his diagnosis to today was so meticulously timed that we cannot deny the hand of God in his life.
We want to thank every single person who has reached out with prayers, emotional, and physical support. During this time of grief we ask if you will continue to keep our family in your prayers.
Chang Kyun Chong (74) was born on May 30, 1946 in Seoul, Korea. He was only 3 years old when he lost his mother to a North Korean soldier in the midst of the North and South Korean war. In the start of his adulthood he joined the Korean marines and fought in the Vietnam war. A proud veteran but an even more talented musician, he left his home to pursue his musical legacy in the USA. It’s no secret that our father was born a musical genius as he was able to pick up any instrument whether it be a piano or bagpipe and play it flawlessly. He had perfect pitch as a musician, composer, and producer. His greatest achievement was playing 3 saxophones simultaneously which allowed him to be featured on the Guinness book records of Korea, LA times, Star King, KBS, TVN, and many more. He then devoted his life as a musical pastor traveling the world pursuing the call upon his life. While the world knew him as a musical genius, we knew him as our father; the backbone of our family. His family always came first while his achievements came second. A son, brother, husband, and father of 4 girls, 2 in which he had at the age of 52 his life was committed to being the best father he can be. Despite his old age, he always started his day at 4am working hard to provide a roof over our heads and putting our needs first. If any of us needed something he would drop everything to be there for us. As a father he set the bar so high that his qualities shaped our standard of fatherhood for our future children.
Today we thank God for giving him a life lived to the fullest. As his earthly purpose has come to an end, his purpose will continue to live on in heaven.
Until we meet again, we love you TOO much and honor you TOO much Appa. Your legacy will continue to live on through us.
