Ghost in the Machine

Closing in on the final tracks of my Upcoming EP, “For the Wolves.” Really trying to be smart about branding so I have a question for all of you guys. I love the name ghost in the machine but I feel like it’s just such a long name to represent a one person show. I originally came up with the name to represent how o thought of myself as the ghost (a nobody in the music industry) trying to create art in an industry that’s more concerned with churning out pop singles than art in its truest form (ergo the music industry being the machine). I’ve put a lot of thought into it, and I’m considering a name change so I don’t have to feel like it’s such a mouthful for people to say, and for me to explain when I’m showing people my music in real life haha.

OBVIOUSLY I want to pay homage to my original name, but I’m considering changing the band name from Ghost in the Machine to Ghosted for a couple reasons.
1) easier to say, and I think reflects the idea I’m only one person doing this a bit more

2) it still uses ghost, I don’t want to respect the roots of where I’ve started, but make it easier for song titles and stuff. For example, one of my upcoming songs is entitled “Homesick.” I think homesick by ghosted comes off the tongue a lot easier than homesick by ghost in the machine

3) as many of you know, my wife left me about 10 months ago, and I also feel the name ghosted reflects the way the industry treats small artists (just like ghost in the machine has) but also helps represent me as a person via one of the most difficult things to occur in my life, and feels more unique to myself as a person than something long

TLDR: Considering changing my name from Ghost in the Machine to Ghosted. You guys have been here with me and are just as much apart of the band as I am. So what are your thoughts?

Follow your heart, your music won't be defined by your band name, the band name will be defined by the music. Either way, it's the music that puts the meaning behind the band.

Ghost in the machine speaks at a much bigger level than us too. It symbolises the "I am" consciousness in all of us getting churned by the cogs of the over all machinery of society. Not toention the greatest machine being creation and the consciousness that creates it. Its a huge acknowledgement to revolutionising perception. Much respect and love you're great work. Helped me through some of my harding times.

I support the original name .... because I feel like 'Ghosted' is so simple that it could get lost in other... Also 'Ghost in the Machine' sounds so much better than 'Ghosted'... But Also, I feel that reasoning behind name change is is valid... As you said the new name honors the old one... I feel like it doesn't have to be like that... Maybe you should reconsider the decision of changing the name OR it's time to start a thought process for new name... Either way, I support the decision you'll come up with & I think others will too... Love from India

Ghost in the machine is beautiful, poetic, and is painted on our minds. I think if you change, it's not because you think itll be a mouthful for others, think about yourself. AND GHOST in the machine still.implies one person, in the machine.

Names, like all words, are open to interpretation. A name won't evoke the same response from two people, and there will always be those who will simply never understand. To give a thing a name is to give it meaning, but no one has true control over what meaning is discerned from a name. I believe you need to go with what you feel represents you best in the moment, while paying homage to your history, and looking forward to the future. But, that may be impossible, as growth redefines a thing. In short, you can only do what feels right to you, and hope for the best. As an aside, your musical vision is FANTASTIC, and I'm thrilled to have found your work. It's been a true joy to experience.

I personally feel that changing your name implies changing a part of your mindset. The name ghost in the machine has a deep meaning whereas ghosted, although as a reference to your original artist name makes some sense, alone it doesn't have the same vibe at all. Ghosted from a new pair of eyes feels like someone left alone, which is true by your story. However I feel that on another level, it might trap you in the mindset of the abandoned when what your tried to convey at the start was one guy trying to get some quality out there. Also, it might actually hurt you in the long run to remind yourself of being ghosted constantly since it's your brand and when you'll move on, it'll impede you emotionally and you might ditch the channel or re-rebrand yourself again. That's my take on it, I love Ghost in the machine and although it's a mouthful, so is lynyrd skynyrd ^^ Love to you, take care

Honestly, change is good, it shows you that you are ready to move on from some things, or see them differntly. As much as you have an outward explanation of your name, I loved using TheFightingOne, for example, as a reflection of everyone's own day to day struggles, the names also very personal, I was fighting depression and anxiety, life fell apart and the name reflected that too. I support the name change, nothings permanent except your own evolution. Honest opinion :)

Man, your work is amazing. The name doesn't make a difference, as long as the music does. As your music evolves, so does your name, and I think it's pretty cool man.

@jinx.moonchild

I voted for keeping the original name. On one hand 'Ghost in the Machine' sounds so much more. 'Ghosted' on the other hand sounds like you are haunted. Contray to what you have discribed in my opinion. But if you have an urgent feeling, you need to change the name now. Then do it and also ignore if the majority is against it. I love you and your music no matter what name you will wear in the future. As long as you can look in the mirror every day and say, "Yes, that's me and that's how it feels right." Then I think it's right too. Love from Germany ❤️

I think Ghost in the Machine has a nice rhythm to it and compared to other bands it's not actually that long ( i'm thinking stuff like Panic at The Disco etc.) It's memorable and interesting, but if people like your music then it's that they'll remember you by compared to however you chose to brand yourself. Good luck with your decision!

Feel free to change it to how you see fit. Eventually it will be accepted by everyone, time will take care of that. The old name will stick around for quite some time until its eventually ghosting away..

Even if you change it, you’ll still always be our Ghost in the Machine. It’s your life man, we can’t stop you

GITM: what I visualize in your name is what I feel in your music. I vote to keep the name and create a symbol that represents what you feel for the next chapter in your creations. ( just my .02 cents)

Maybe Ghost ITM, it's really up to how you feel about it.

@Eymbr

I have a fevv things to say about this so please don't feel overvvhelmed by this. I started in an extremely niche part of the music industry. Vocaloid, the voice synthesizer program largely used and knovvn in Japan. I vvas once knovvn and sometimes still go by the name VVHYSPR in the Vocaloid scene. I vvas ignored, pushed avvay, attacked, made fun of and mocked by several producers. After some time I began to feel very similar to hovv you feel. I vvas basically the only person in the vvest vvho vvas making aggressive metal music using Vocaloids. I had been in a bad spot for several vveeks and decided to prove something on social media. I called out the people vvho vvere being mean and attacking me. I linked my music under the call out and vvatched as my music spiked from 1 or 2 vievvs in the span of a month to over 60 in a single hour. I changed my artist name to Eymbr aftrr that and left the Vocaloid scene as the drama burned. My attitude tovvards making music at the time vvas to make friends, have fun and be part of a community. The other producers only vvanted fame and fortune. I felt like your namesake "a Ghost In The Machine" ignored and hated by my peers. Novv my music under the name VVHYSPR sits on my hardrive never to be released again because of vvhat I had been through and done. My music under the name Eymbr is pure art, my pure expression of creativity unbound by the shackles of my past. I novv vvrite and produce music along side a fantasy and science fiction novel series proudly as Eymbr the Nøky Elvyn princess. I honestly say change your name because a rebranding of yourself not only as an artist but as a person can allovv you to grovv. The name Ghosted means something more than feeling alone in an industry that only cares for pop and repetitive music. It has a greater meaning stemming from your personal life and experience. The name Ghosted fits and reflects you as an artist and a person. You can use both names. Ghosted for your ovvn music and Ghost In The Machine for remixes or even used an an alter ego of yourself. Ghosted could become the main persona vvho crafts your signature style and Machine could be used as a name you go by for other genres and styles. Try to think of vvho you are and vvhat your goals are as an artist. Are you Ghosted most of the time or are you Machine more? VVhat is your goal as an artist? Do you vvant to be knovvn for remixing, original music or even s cover artist? Think about vvhere you see yourself in the future and vvhat identity you feel is better for you. I voted for the name change because I did it and it has made me a far better and more driven artist.
