Tom Scott

What would you ask the world?

If you're an academic who wants to ask something of a large and representative sample of the public, or if there's a debate you want settled by public opinion, I might be able to help. [edit: the form is now closed, thanks all]

I feel like the video made based on this form will start with “ if you’re thinking about opening a Google form to anyone on the Internet, don’t.”

This itself is a study of how people respond when prompted to ask a question

Calling it now, one of the questions will be "What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?"

That's so kind of Scott, sharing his status to professionals who could use this resource!

To the Tom of the past: What a wonderful idea! To the Tom of the present: How lovely you executed this great idea. To the Tom of the future: I’m so incredibly sorry you have to work your way through all those answers.

But like the “What is the best thing” video, you’re going to get answers from extremely online nerds

My question: "If you were to ask the world one question, what would that question be?"

@TheHackysack

I think a great question would just be to ask, "Why?" and see what kind of things people respond with. It'd be interesting to see how people interpret the question to begin with.

I'm excited for this, here's my question: "If you think about every human being in the world, all the 7.8 Billion of us. What percentage of this do you think are inherently evil, neutral and good? And how much do you think that YOUR personal life experiences with other people throughout your life shaped your answer to this question?" This is particulalrly exciting for me because i asked this question to many people before, those who had a difficult upbringing or many difficulties in life always said that the majority of the humans were evil. But those who had a very conforting life in general always said that most humans were either Neutral or Good. It makes me curious to see how much your Bias on life can change the way you perceive human beings around you. It might be obvious when you think about yourself, but how would that question change when asked to a big group of people?

I would ask: Is the human condition a collective experience, or is it only an individual experience? In other words, do you grow, learn, experience happiness and suffering as one group that is all in the same boat, or does your experience not account for the experiences of those around you?

“Is history science? “ I recently encountered this question in a history class in Taiwan. And the response was very surprising to me. I also asked some of my friends and they got so worked up after I asked them a few following questions. I thought it’d be fun to analyze the answer regarding the subjects background, like culture, profession, etc. Oh and it’d be even more fun to see what ppl‘d do when their theory gets questioned. And if the identity of the person who’s asking question makes a difference. Doesn’t matter what their answer is just challenge them 😂

I'm doing a project on human aesthetics and fractal rn, I would really like to know if the preference for mid level fractal dimensions is as universal as I read about. I also want to know if the fractal dimension of a image plays into our reaction time and if we are able read in and memorise data of mid level fractal dimension images better (I wanna know if the fractal way we read in visual data has helped us evolutionarily)
