My take on this question is that one should follow the MAYA Principle. Most Advanced Yet Acceptable. Following trends (especially if you catch them early) can be a phenomenal way to capture attention, but it comes at a cost - you become like everyone else. On the other side, only doing what you believe is right, can lead to you not being able to reach your full potential on social media. Let us take for example the LinkedIn polls - it trendy to use them as the algorithm is pushing them, but if you do, make sure you are bringing something unique and thought-provoking to the table in order to stand out. Use the most advanced methods which are acceptable - gather attention with trends and convert it into results with who you are

I think both. first of all do your own thing and also follow trends to get an extra boost . Btw what do you think about this ???

I think you have to keep up with general trends, and incorporate them into what you do, while keeping a core theme of quality. That's the goal I guess. Think of musicians that have been popular for a long time, like Madonna (whether you like her or not, I'm not a big fan), but she's been around for ages. She's always Madonna, but she changes her sound to keep up with the times and use current ideas.
