The EMD DDA40X is a 6600 hp (4943 kW) D-D locomotive, built from 1969 to 1971 exclusively for the Union Pacific Railroad. It is the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive model ever built on a single frame, having two 16-645E3A diesel prime movers. Union Pacific has marked DD40X on the cab exteriors, while EMD literature inconsistently refers to this model as either DD-40X or DDA40X. UP's DDA40X locomotives were the ultimate culmination of the company's experiments with extremely powerful locomotives that began with its gas turbine-electric locomotives and DD35s. For manufacturer EMD, the construction of the world's most powerful single frame locomotive was a sign of the company's dominance of the North American diesel locomotive market, with only GE Transportation an equal competitor. The DDA40X also pioneered a number of new technologies that would go on to be incorporated in future EMD designs. The "X" in the name stands for "experimental", and many systems were tested in the Centennials, including modular electronics used in the -2 models and later EMD products, an air raid style siren to indicate movement (this was not kept), and integrated load testing for the electronics. The wide cab was the same as the FP45/F45 cowl units, and lacked the increased structural bracing in modern "safety" cabs. Thirteen DDA40Xs survive today, including No. 6936, which is still in service with Union Pacific, but it is stored, and believed to be operable. * 6900 - Kenefick Park, Omaha, Nebraska. The first DDA40X built, it is situated next to Big Boy locomotive 4023. * 6901 - Ross Park, Pocatello, Idaho. * 6911 - Mexico Museum of Technology, Mexico City. * 6913 - Museum of the American Railroad, Frisco, Texas. * 6915 - Southern California Chapter, Railway and Locomotive Historical Society, Fairplex, Pomona, California. * 6916 - Utah State Railroad Museum, Ogden, Utah. * 6922 - Cody Park, North Platte, Nebraska. * 6925 - Stored at Dakota Southern Railway’s rail yard located in Chamberlain, South Dakota, having been used as a parts source and for fuel storage. It is now owned by the Nebraska Railroad Museum, with money being raised to move it to its new home in Nebraska City, NE. * 6930 - Illinois Railway Museum, Union, Illinois. Can be used as a control cab but not as a full locomotive as the engines and motors are currently non-operational. * 6936 - In service with Union Pacific Heritage Fleet. * 6938 - North Little Rock, Arkansas. Sits in front of Jenks Locomotive Facility. * 6944 - Museum of Transportation, St. Louis, Missouri. No. 6944 was sent to Altoona in July 2014 for cosmetic restoration, which was completed in May 2015. The locomotive returned to St. Louis in June 2015. * 6946 - Western Pacific Railroad Museum, Portola, California. The last DDA40X built, it is fairly complete and on static display. There horns were Leslie S5s and S3s

In May 6 1985, UP 6936 has been part of the railroads excursion fleet at that time. Today UP 6936 is stored in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Emd did not make the frame for the dda40x they had to contract the John Muir company of Chicago to do the frame casting. I also happen to work across the street from the complex where they made the dda40x

Originally desiccated DD40AX, Up changed there Mines and went for the now well know DDA40X So pleased with DD35, UP wanted more, and emd at the time wanted to try out there new dash-2 electronics, plus UP wanted some think special for up coming 1969 celebration, thus the cententsil was born. The chassis for these locos were not built by EMD has there facilties could not handle the huge length. They were built by John Mohr company in Chicago. Originally the horn wete placed in the center of the long hood, then moved to above the cab, varies types of horns wete used the most weird was a large Air raid siren. 6903 was involved in a wreck near on Cajon pass April 74. And was later cut up. The chassis was offed to some one (I forget who) has bridge to cross a small stream, it never happened. 6950 was 2nd wreck at Peru June 1979, it received a new cab latter and ran for 6 more years. And 6936 hit a dump truck. 6936 is reffered to by UP employer's has "BIG JACK" There's is a gap between the front hood and the Rear hood between the walkway and its only covered by thick rubber. , Thus one half of the locos hood can be removed at any time with out affecting the other. Tecnically emds original FT A&B unit was classed has one loco, at the time and was longer than the 6900! I would be very easy to turn o e 6900 into a DD35!

Origninally Built with 7k HP with two v16 3300 HP prime movers and 8 powered 8 axles on a pair of 4 Axel trucks and a top speed of 90mph. With a length of 98 feet long with a tractive effort of 138k lbs. There were 47 built from 1969-1972 and were retired in 1982 was 20 preserved. They were the first hood units to use the modern emd wide cab and have jet liner technology. They also were the first to start EMDs Dash2 line. The x on the end of the name meant expirimental Hope this was helpful if u need help message me on discord
