Talkernate History

The next video will be a History in General™ episode about the 1948 election. This is a crazy election! Truman, the quintessential accidental president, fighting against all odds to maintain his presidency. Dewey, the beloved gangbuster with a legendary moustache trying to unseat a president for the second time. And the unlikely dyad of Strom Thurmond and Henry Wallace, running as third and fourth party candidates respectively, both campaigning for president as an attempted act of revenge against the system they felt wronged them.

This episode should be completed sometime within the next few weeks. If you'd like to do some reading about this election ahead of time, here are some books we've read on the subject which we found really fascinating:

1948: Harry Truman's Improbable Victory and the Year that Transformed America by David Pietrusza
The World That Wasn't: Henry Wallace and the Fate of the American Century by Benn Steil
Dewey Defeats Truman: The 1948 Election and the Battle for America's Soul by AJ Baime

@rorythecomrade4461

I'm really excited to see another history video from you all. I've been following since 2018, when I was only 13 or 14 years old. I'm 21 now and still really happy to see you posting, and somewhat often go on binges of old content. I really love it. Keep up the good work!

Whenever i think of Dewey all i can ever think of is Alice Roosevelt saying he looks "like the little bridegroom on the wedding cake" I feel like you could make an entire episode just about all the people she insulted

Strom Thurmond really was around forever. I remember when he was still in Congress, and I'm not even 40.

My dad has been to the Truman museum in Independence, it still has the Dewey Defeats Truman newspaper proudly on display. I think that might be my favorite election related artifact. Can't wait. I hope you guys mention Harry Trumans campaign song that year, "I'm Just Wild About Harry." Yes that is the actual title.

Not in any way about 1948, but there's one WW2 operation you should discuss in a future episode. Between 1941-1944 there's the Englandspiel, a counter intelligence operation by the Abwehr in the Netherlands. It is seen as a big reason for the failure of Market Garden due to distrust created between the Dutch resistance and the British military

I’d love to see it as soon as it comes out but by then I’ll be in boot camp, and I don’t think they’ll allow me to watch a potentially two hour episode because I asked them nicely!
